In the above assertion, the arguer talks about a society's ideas and values could be judged by its people's appearance and behavior, for it could reveal their attitudes and interests. However, I hold the opinion that attitudes and interests could affect people's appearance and behavior, but adversely, people's performance due to other confinements could not necessarily express the ideas of society. And it's fair to take other factors, besides its people, into consideration.
Sense of fashion, position of national party, craze about sports, etc. could affect people's appearance and behavior, like their look, dress, and act. Psychologically, it's explainable to reach this contention. Suppose, it's on a conference in a large scale, we can see people of different. If one is more conservative and cautious, he might be in suits and ponder for a lot time before making a speech. If one is a sports fan, he might be not that neatly dress, just dress casually, and more energetic and active in the discussion and speech. In this sense, the attitudes and interests of people could affect people's look, dress, and act.
Adversely, whether people's look, dress, act necessarily reflect their ideas and interests? It remains more consideration. As long as people belongs to the society, he is not himself actually for he is under quite a lot of conventions and restrictions all the time, like traditional values, social status and living conditions, etc. As a result, people are not quite free enough to be themselves. Thus, their appearance and behavior are not enough to express the society. For instance, in some special historical period, there existed religious, political persecutions. The cause might be that one said or conducted something people in power wouldn't want to see, while any objection or distracts couldn't be allowed. The repressed ideas and beliefs are also a part of the society's. In this sense, the society's ideas, especially those hold by minorities, could expressed freely which results in incomplete of society's ideas. To both people and society, it's a loss.
Personally, I would like to define the ideas and values as part of the social environment, which contains both inner and outer part. For the inner part, I mean people living inside, their attitudes and favors. Outer part, by saying this I mean, history of development, policies, legislations, security, etc. The legislations of the society which regulates people's behavior, the policies made by government raise the expected people's behavior, and also the security system also reflects society's ideas. For instance, the prohibition of alcoholics in British history, it kept people from spirits which might not be its people's real intentions. As far as I am concerned, to understand the society's ideas comprehensively, it's indispensable to take society's outer part into account which influences people's appearance and behavior.
In sum, people's appearance and behavior cannot comprehensively reflect and express the whole society, which need more information acquired through the detection of its policies, legislations, etc. That would be a wise and appropriate way to reach a contention. |
