The speaker asserts scandals are useful for its magic power to focus our attention on problems whether in politics, academia, or other areas. From my standpoint, scandals do have the magic power to focus attention leading to efficient problem solving, however the distraction from what really matters they caused definitely outweigh the benefits they brought.

Admittedly, comparing to harangues of speakers or reformers, scandals could draw larger scale of people to concentrate on one certain issue, possibly because of the anger they arose or the natural curiosity. As known, majority of scandals are about celebrities who are closely connected to social and political issues.
Consequently scandals lead to pervasive buzz and froth about certain problem in politics, academia, or other areas, which urges the relevant officials or organizations to put theproblem on the top of the agenda. And that is proved in the case of Official Wang. Official  Wang was stuck in the scandal that buys a beautiful young model a magnificent house, which was evidently beyond his normal income. Then with further information provided by the public and investigation, he turned out to accept brides and assign some projects to several companies which are not competent in exchange. In this case, the projects were reassigned before they caused more damage because of quality problem.

In addition, scandals also result in irreparable damage to personal image, which leads to the loss of credence and harm to his career. That is to say, scandals also becomea powerful way to refrain the behavior of people especially celebrities. And that will  make our society runs more efficiently and healthily.

However, throw a glance of the media, and we could see quantities of reports about scandals. But how many proportions the scandals, which can bring us benefits, take. The answer is not that satisfying as expected. Majority of the scandals are about private life especially private affairs of singers and movie stars. No matter whether you figure out why, the public are always crazy about the private scandals of stars to some extent. And that is exactly where the profit of the entertainment media comes from. Then more and more reporters incline to hunt scandals about private life, which definitely affect the life of the target. They seem always to care about what Paris Hilton does today. Another case is that, several indecent pictures of a famous actor  
and some actress, namely the sex scandals of stars, caused a stormy concentration lasting more than a year. After that, what do we get? I do not see anything meaningful. Besides, the releaser of these pictures is accused by the court.

What's more, when people care too much about such meaningless scandals, how much do they save for the really significant things. Would it be possible for a person to suddenly think of the refugees in the middle east when individuals around are talking about the relationship among Jeniffer Aniston, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Taking the proportions into consideration, the function of distracting the public from what really matters is so magnitude that the scandals are far from useful. Furthermore, some people may also take advantage scandals to distract for their own interest.

In sum, even though scandals could somewhat help draw attention and solve problem, the disadvantages they possessed evidently make the benefits fade. In this case, we can  
not claim scandals as useful after comprehensive consideration.
