How to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level? The author suggests that all faculty should
spend time working outside relevant to the courses they teach. As the saying goes that a coin has its two sides. I concede
that it is neccessarily for some teachers or professoners to work out if their main research field is such as engineering,
arithitecture,electric, and on the other hand there is no need for the teachers to work out if they teach mathematics,
physics,chemistry and other fundation courses.
In the field of engineering, computer science, electric and others like these, the faculty should work out of their academic
world.Since the pace of technological advancement in these fields is so fast that knowledge contained in recently published
textbooks often lags current developments. In computer sciences world, the computer language develops very quickly and often
updates once or twice a year. Six years ago, the J2EE technological just came in vogue and it was usually for the computer
student did not know this technique, but nowadays, if the student donot know about this, it is no account. So it is my
opinion for the staff of these domains should keep the pace of the social development and even the text books should be
updated annually.
There is also a further effect for the staff to work out in the fields metioned upon.In these fields, the students are often
asked to create somehting by themselves as a course project.They must link theory with practice and get improved and studied
int the practise and enhance themselves. So if the teacher is full of practical experience, the students will benifet a
lot. The teacher can act as a guide or a light during the students study life to tell them what to do and what not do or how
to do and how to do well. And this practical experience teaches the students more than any book.
However, if the professor's major study field is mathematics, physics or other core courses, there is no need for them to
work out. Since theories of physics and mathematics do not change. A famous story suggests Newton discovered the laws of
gravity by watching an apple fall from a tree. The law of universal gravitation is that existence all interacts between any
two objectis gravitation and this theory is not replaced or refused during the past hundreds years. In these domains, the
knowledge does not changes quickly and even does not transform. Maybe only a small sum of theories need to amend and
improve. So them should concentrate on their studies and not work out of their academic world.
Although some staff should work out of their academic world, them should keep the balance of the work in school and out of
school. Going too far is as bad as not going far enough, meaning redundant outside work may do harm to insturction. The
speed of teaching maybe increased and the students cannot follow up. And after lesson, when the students have questions,
them cannot keep in touch with their teachers successfully since their teachers are out of school for their works. And this
result in the decrease of the quality of education which all of the faculty and students do not want to see.
In sum, I concede that it is nessarily for some teachers to work out of their academic world.Nonetheless, to some extent,
the speaker's claim overrates the importance of this that all fauclty should work out. In the final analysis, the optimal
approach, in my view, is a balanced one that, in some pariticular fields, the faculty should or must work out to improve
their quality of edcucation while in other core fields should not. And if the teachers work out, they must stress on both
hands of teaching and working. |
