The issue about whether college faculty should spend some time working outside the academic world, in profession work related to their academic field, in my opinion, primarily depends on the specific academic area they teach. Admittedly, for some subjects, especially pure theoretical field such as philosophy and mathematics, outside work is inappropriate. However, I strongly agree with the statement in most academic fields faculty will benefit their quality of instructions at the college and university level from spending time working outside in professions relevant to the courses they teach, if they could keep a proper percentage of their outside work.

Admittedly, in certain academic field there is no profession to speak of outside academia. this is especially true in philosophy and mathematic, after all, what work outside academia is there for professors who teach such kind of subjects? What's more, a strong academic atmosphere in the college would lend more support to the theoretical subjects than the practical working experience in outside world.

Nevertheless, aside from these theoretical subjects, I agree it was worthwhile for college faculty to work outside academia in professions fields related to their teaching. There are two major benefits of doing so.

First, as the pace of technological advances is so quick nowadays, knowledge contained in the textbooks are often lag current development. Practical working experience in the non-academic world, will improve the faculty's understanding of the course they teeth, helping them to keep abreast of the changing demand of work as a professional.  Take the computer science for example,  as a field developing in highly speed, the practical experience in the IT industry could help the faculty and their student know better about how to transform their research results into production more effectively.

Secondly, by knowing more information about the demand of industry, college and university teachers can design their courses to according to the needs of the professional fields better.  In addition, professor with field experience would know more about current job market. All these put the faculty in a better position to help students adjust their career development.

But at last, I would like to point out that redundant outside work may do harm to the instruction. As the old saying goes, going too far is as bad as not going far enough,  the faculty should must be careful to strike a proper balance in their outside work, otherwise it will lead into jeopardize situation.

In sum, except from certain academic areas where outside work is unavailable or unnecessary, professors should spend appropriate time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to their courses.
