Is education effective only when it is specifically designed according to the individual needs and interests? Generally, I disagreed on this issue for its unrealistic availability. In addition, the emphasis should firstly be put on the basic subjects to prepare for the exertion and cultivation of interests. Nevertheless, we cannot deny the important role interests play in the process of education.
The reasonability of real interests and needs of the students is uncertain. The uncertainty of the reasonability is more obvious when it comes to primary education during which the students may not seek out what their real interests are. Actually, primary education is a process which provides students with the guidance of the development of interests and needs. In this sense, the arguer’s point could be correct only when it's based on the reliability and reasonability of real interests and needs of each student. So when we judge whether it is effective to offer specific interest design for students, the first thing should be confirmed is the stage of education one stays.
In addition, the importance of some basic subjects mustn't be neglected for their profound influence on the achievements of students' comprehensive development. For instance, mathematics, verbal, history, laid a foundation of the process which is concerning the further pursuit of knowledge that they are interested in. If those basic subjects of great significance are ignored, while most energy is put on the sheer development of interests, the future perfection of an acquisitive individual will be effected negatively.
In fact, what we can not neglect is the availability of this kind of individualized education design, concerning the limitation and shortage of the teaching resources. We are not able to design a certain program specifically fit one single person according to their distinguished interests and needs. To some extend, it's not an optimum way to arrange teaching resources scientifically this way for the regular teaching process would be impressively affected. A combination of the basic subject teaching and interest development could be a wise choice, if time and energy are scientifically distributed between them.
However, we can not deny the important role which interests play in the study process. The psychological survey convinced us interests are the best teachers. It's true that students are more passionate when they are working on their favorite subjects, instead, they don't want to spend even one second on those assigned but not interested ones. We can imagine that one day the education system will be quite effective if the scheduled curriculum is individually designed according to the students' real taste.
In sum, schools are expected to adjust the education system more favorable to the healthy development of students. On condition that students have fulfilled the compulsory courses, they are free to choose what they are interested in. And this requires schools scientifically arrange money and resources to provide those optional courses. For instance, in the major of English, several concrete research directions can be available--- literature, linguistics, etc. Thus, the students can avoid generalization and can pursue their interested knowledge more specifically and successfully. |
