RE: Issue 121(球拍,有拍有回)
121."Atvarious times in the geological past, many species have become extinctas a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is nojustification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially ata great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species."
I agree with thespeaker’s board assertion that since as a result of natural processes, lots of species have become extinct, without human at many times in thegeological past, it is not fair to make expanse to humans in effort, time, and financial well-being, to save endangered species. However, sometimes we still have some responsibilities of helping those speciesdying out because in the development of industrialization somepollution and environmental disasters are made by human being.
To began with andbasically, we can see the statements make sense that in old times thosespecies would die out for failure to adapt to other changing conditionsrather than human processes for the reason that there was no humanbeing existing in the world at that time. As soon as the livingcondition changes, such as weather becoming too hot or too cold, habitats diminishing, hardly finding their food, species would allprobably extinct, no matter how strong and powerful they used to be.Here’s a good example that can illustrate my point. During the lateJurassic Period and possibly the Early Cretaceous Period, lived a genusof sauropod dinosaur. Brachiosaurus, meaning “arm lizard” was one ofthe largest animals known to have walked the earth. Even though theywere huge and powerful, they suddenly became extinct approximately 65million years ago, with many other groups of dinosaurs. The nature ofthe events that caused this mass extinction has been extensivelystudied and accepted, such as the asteroid collision. It is said thatthe impact caused extinctions both directly (by the heat from themeteorite impact) and also indirectly (via a worldwide cooling broughtabout when matter ejected from the impact crater reflected thermalradiation from the sun). Also some paleontologists believe that failureto survive in changing conditions is the truth of extinction ofdinosaurs. Whatever is really truth, those species died out about 65million years ago; by that time none of human being existed on thisplanet. Yet, they still disappeared from the Earth without any of us.As a matter of fact, the dinosaur is just one of the millions of theextinct species during the past millions of years. Accordingly, somespecies would not survive in this changing world because of pooradaptation or natural selection as a result they would die out, that iswhat we could not help.(1.
Furthermore, from apractical point of view, inadequate resources call for restrictions, priorities, and choices. Even though human were so merciful that wecould not bear to ignore other species dying out, our society can notmake extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost. The need ofhuman being and our society, of course, must be put on the firstconsideration. What is more, the needs are increasing day by day.Overpopulation has become a serious environmental problem, even worsebringing a series of problems like insufficient resources includingfresh water, clean air, food, land, energy, and other resourcesnecessary to sustain life. What is more, the society has to take careof lots of society problems which also cost our great efforts andfinancial well-being. We are not the Lord of nature and we can not doeverything. Facing those problems of nature and society, we have tomake choice and selectively overcome them one by one. In short, thegovernment and society have to make choices sometimes to make sure atleast people need should be met at first and then other things can beconsidered later.
It is true thatsome extinction of species is entirely irrelevant for our human beingor we could barely do anything to help them out of trouble, however, insome other situations, that animals and plants dying out because ofhuman processes and development of society is a truly fact. With theprogress of human civilization and growing population, forestsespecially rain forests millions of species rely on as their habitatsare being quickly destroyed. As we all know, habitats are so particularfor animal and plant species to inhabit. What means that, losing theirhabitat would become a disaster for those species, without properenvironments and food. Despite the opposition to the cutting down ofrain forests, the problem continues. In addition to the Amazon’s rainforests, many other forests are being cut down as well. The world’growing population has been a primary cause of the rain forestdestruction. More people need land to live on and wood products toconsume. What is more, industrial developments take so much resourcewhich other species rely on from natural, meanwhile bring tons ofpollutions and dregs into environment causing several environmentalproblems such as acid rain, air pollutions, water pollutions, globalwarming, smog etc. All of those problems can destroy thousands ofspecies’ living pattern and land they inhabit, which is out of anyadoption or natural selection. Indeed, all these serious issues as aresult of human processes would of course damage the living conditionof other species in the world.
Simply put, somespecies would still extinct no matter human processes. However, oursociety have to save the endangered species because a fire amount ofinappropriate human processes or lots of species are such treasure tous, that we have the responsibility for making sure that those speciesnot exist in our offspring’s textbooks.
