184 It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data.
In this contention, the speaker claims that theory before date is a mistake. In a sense, I concede that data plays an indispensable part to theorize. However, the claimant ignores the essential influence that sometimes people need not to collect enough date to theorize. In this way, the contention seems to be a bit extreme, and therefore his or her standpoint is suspended to some extent.
Admittedly, in the realm of art, many prominent artists can not be recognized in their time, since those populace are devoid of date and spirit to understand their thinking and creativeness. To manifest this notion, let us look at Van Gogh who sold only one painting in his entire career since the relevant date and knowledge are lack to lay people in that period, but they theorize that Van Gogh’s paintings are not worthy to buy. As a result, Van Gogh suffered from poverty in his whole life. Furthermore, the early listener of Beethoven dismiss his works as literally causing their ears to hurt, since they accustomed with the traditional rhythm and do not acknowledge the novel melodic length of symphonies. However, either Van Gogh or Beethoven is proved to prominent in their field in the latter time. As offered above, the conclusion can be draw that it is a grave mistake for people to theorize before collecting and having enough data.
Notwithstanding with the foregoing proviso, it would be hard pressed for me to agree with the contention entirely. Consider, for example, in the world of business, the profit maximization is always the goal of the leaders or the employees. Sometimes it is so long time to collect data before make decisions that the opportunities to benefit pass by. Thus, sometimes, it is necessary for the leaders in company to theorize before having data according the business trend. Or, consider the area of technology, with standing on the shoulder of giants, Newton become the founder of three fundamental laws without enough data, which dramatically give an impulse to the development of physics. Also, the theory of relativity is advanced by Albert Einstein who are devoid of the sufficient data and experiments about it. Hence, to theorize before having enough data is invisible to some extent.
Furthermore, if only make a theory after having data, people might be impeded to achieve success in a certain circumstance. It is true when it comes to the field of enactment of laws. The rulers who enact the laws of a nation or a state need to have a predictable insight to enact the law, since the resulting consequence which has no similar one before might occur. It is impossible for the rulers to make the legislation to enact the legislation after collecting all the data. As the example conveys, to theorize before collecting data is not a mistake.
To sum up,
I concede that date need to be collected before to theorize when taking the world of art into consideration. However, the claimant neglects that data is not so vital in the realm of business, technology and the politics. In this way, we may choose to theorize before collecting data to a certain extent.
