1. What's the size of the Advertising program? How many Chinese students enroll in this program? I want to engage in a diverse classroom environment with students from different countries.
Our advertising program size varies from year to year. We intentionally keep it small; we generally range from 6 to 10 students. It is hard to tell you how many Chinese students enroll because it varies from year to year. This year, half are from China and half are from the U.S. The previous year, we had a mixture of Chinese, American, and Indian students, but the majority were Chinese. Like many programs in the U.S., we have a large number of Chinese students because there is a greater demand for graduate education from China.
2.Are discussions, team projects and debates common in classes?
Our courses have a lot of discussion and team projects, which helps train students for American-style advertising agencies. They are very team-based and discussion oriented. A few courses are a little more lecture based, but that has more to do with the nature of the topic. All courses have discussion components.
3.What's the common format of the professional project? Is it an individual project or a group project?
The professional project is always an individual project. Formats vary, but all must have an original research component and review/application of relevant industry literature. Students do a variety of project, so that's why the format varies.
4. For international students, can we intern in the first academic year? Is it common to see international students who can balance study and work in a paid or unpaid internship? And do you know the percentage of students who can find internships in vacations?
Students can intern. They often do so over the summer, but there is no rule prohibiting internships during the fall or spring semesters and balancing work and school does not seem to be a problem. I should, however, tell you that most internships in the U.S. are unpaid. I know of a few students who have found paid internships, but that is not the norm. Regarding internship percentages, that is not something we track. Keep in mind some of our MADV students plan to go on to PhD programs, so they are not interested in internships. However, just from my observations, I will say that most who want internships find them, particularly if their English skills are strong. The ones who struggle with English tend not to get internships.
Also keep in mind that you can apply to work for The Agency, which is our College's advertising agency (you do not get paid to work there; you get course credit). A few of our students choose this option.
5. For the statistics course, do you mean that I may need to take it before I graduate from the program? I find no relative course in the Advertising program degree plan. Should I take it as an elective outside the college of Journalism and comm?
If you did not take a Statistic course, you will be required to do so before you can graduate with your Master’s degree.
