1. Opportunities of working on Computational Biology/Bioinformatics at the Rutgers University
(1) Ph.D. Program in Biology with Computational Biology Track
http://newarkbiosci.rutgers.edu/graduate.htm
http://newarkbiosci.rutgers.edu/computational.htm
a. Overview
Students with undergraduate degrees either in biology, in mathematics or physical sciences may be admitted to this track. Students lacking a mathematics background will be expected to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in mathematics and computational techniques by the time they finish their qualifying examination. Students lacking a background in biology will be expected to demonstrate a basic knowledge of biology by the time they finish their qualifying examination.
The Biology Department Graduate Standards Committee will evaluate all students’ qualifications in biology, mathematics and computational techniques prior to the completion of the qualifying examinations. Students admitted into the Computational Biology Track must declare a Field of Specialization within one year of their admission date. Some required and elective courses depend on the student’s Field of Specialization. Changes in the Field of Specialization may be allowed with the approval of the Graduate Standards Committee.
b. Faculty
The Ph.D. Track in Computational Biology will start with an initial focus on Neuroscience as the Field of Specialization. The initial faculty in this Field of Specialization will include
Doina Ganea Fed. Dept. of Biological Sciences, Rutgers-Newark
Ronald P. Hart Fed. Dept. of Biological Sciences, Rutgers-Newark
G. Miller Jonakait Fed. Dept. of Biological Sciences, Rutgers-Newark
Farzan Nadim Fed. Dept. of Biological Sciences, Rutgers-Newark
Dept. of Mathematical Sciences, NJIT
Michael Recce Fed. Dept. of Biological Sciences, Rutgers-Newark
Dept. of Mathematical Sciences, NJIT
Dept. of Computer and Information Sciences, NJIT
Gyorgy Buzsaki Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience, Rutgers-Newark
Teresa Perney Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience, Rutgers-Newark

(2) BioMaPS (or so called Programs in Quantitative Biology)
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, BIOMAPS Program,
http://www.biomaps.rutgers.edu/gp_generali.html . This program is
focused on Quantitative Biology, if you have a more solid background
in Molecular Biology, check a complementary program Molecular
Biosciences out, http://lifesci.rutgers.edu/~molbiosci/default.htm
2. Interdepartmental Program in Quantitative Biology (QB) at Brandeis University
http://www.brandeis.edu/programs/quantbio/
The Interdepartmental Program in Quantitative Biology (QB) at Brandeis University is a new graduate program at Brandeis University, starting in the 2006-07 academic year.
The goal of the program is to prepare the next generation of scientists working at the interface of the physical and biomedical sciences. Ph.D. students in the QB program are trained to apply quantitative experimental techniques, physical models, and mathematical analysis to important problems in biomedical research. Students are given a rigorous background in their chosen scientific discipline and at the same time are trained to work effectively as members of the cross-disciplinary teams that are essential to emerging modalities of scientific investigation.
The Quantitative Biology Program at Brandeis is funded by an award from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) as a part of the Interfaces Initiative jointly sponsored by HHMI and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.
a. Application
Note: This is NOT an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program!!!
Only students currently enrolled in one of the six participating Ph.D. programs (see list at left) are elegible to join the QB program. If you are not currently enrolled, you must apply and gain admission to one of the Ph.D. programs before applying to QB.
Ordinarily, students apply for admission to QB during their first or second year of graduate school. If you are interested in the QB program, you should discuss your interest as early as possible with the appropriate Ph.D. program faculty liason and/or with one of the QB co-Chairs.
To apply, students should complete this form and submit it to Trisha Murray in the QB office.
Additional information about participating PhD programs at Brandeis and their relation to the QB program can be obtained by sending E-mail to faculty liaisons, or to one of the QB co-directors.
