作者为本人在LSE法律系时期的一位中国朋友.其应08届一中国llm的请求写的一段在LSE法律系学习的经历,其中包含一些本人的观点.

08 LLM:

Hello! This is xxx. xxx passed me your email address and told me I could contact you regarding LLM courses. I am particularly interested in the field of International Business Law (just as you are, if I understood xxx correctly) I understand that you are having busy time at the moment in connection with a dissertation. So I appreciate your willingness to help me even more. I will try to be specific and short about my questions. 1) I made a preliminary course choice (see attached) and would like to know if you have taken any of them and what you think of them (ir/relevant, interesting, applicable, boring, your recommendations etc.) or what you heard of any from other students that took it? 2) Are tutors ( I read that each student will have one) helpful? Can we ourselves choose the tutor? If yes, who would you recommend? 3) Your general recommendations in the beginning of studies (procedural issues, issues in connection with the courses), lessons you learned etc. 4) Is there any online discussion forum on LLM in LSE? I realized the more i am asking questions the more I have other questions arising in my head :) Anyways, any answer from your side will be appreciated. Thanks and good luck with your dissertation!

Glad to receive your email and apologize for the late reply .How time flied ! I still do not believe my study in LSE is almost coming to the end and I will not be a student any more but a alumni .I would like to describe my life in LSE in London is amazingly great but absolutely tough in my case .

Regarding the course choice ,your preliminary course has no connection with your future study at school because you will submit a new form about course decision after enrollment . As I didn’t get your attachment in the email ,I couldn’t give you any personal opinion on your course .Honestly speaking ,choosing the course is not as serious as you thought and you can just choose what you like or want to study rather than considering factors like the interesting or applicable .Please don’t worry because the school will offer a two-week time you to audit any course which you want to attend and then you make a final decision .In my case ,Regulation of financial market ,fundamental of international business law ,corporate finance and the last one –compensation and the law are my options which are likely irrelevant .Rather , I will get a LLM degree at International Business Law . In terms of my experience ,I do have some recommendations on course option .First of all ,seminar or class ?Normally ,in the seminar ,very few students and you might have lots of opportunities to discuss question and express opinions with your classmate ,the teacher .However ,it does mean that you are probably facing challenges and difficulties during your study .In my course of compensation and the law ,we only have five classmates ,three of them studied law undergraduate in UK ,two others one is from Japan and me is from China .Every Monday was a nightmare for me and this awfully terrible feeling even came earlier on Sunday coz I needed to spend more time for the preparation .You can imagine the situation in the classroom when three nearly native speakers are sitting face to you and most of time my dear teacher likes to point and ask me questions .I always feel like I am the odd one out in the class .Intensive ,highly demanding ,panic and unforgettable is what I can feel in the seminar .However ,In the class ,it is really opposite .It always has large number of students in the class As my tort law teacher said ,you can hide in a big class but you will never hide in a five person class .In order to improve the disadvantages like lack of communications in the class ,the school will offer some so-called back up class for your enquiry .One big tip for the examination is that teachers would prefer to question the problem what they mention in the backup class . Secondly ,English is a big issue for me .I made up my mind to choose my courses by my heart ,ignoring the big problem that when a teacher have very bad oral English .In the regulation of financial market which is mainly about uk financial legislation ,I did get a lesson and completely lost my interest on my study from the second term due to his oral English ,taking this course to do a dissertation instead of examination assessment .I do think you might don’t have this problem as I can see your great written English .Furthermore ,please do not expect to learn so many international business law during the study .Like those course I chose ,regulation of financial market ,fundamental of international business law ,they mostly focus on UK legislation .One exception I know is the law and practice of international finance is quite practical and applicable ,demanding ,though. Lastly ,taking an European law course .I was really regret that I didn’t choose any course about European law .It is a great opportunity to study EU law when you study in EU . Relating to those law courses about international public law ,human rights etc , I will ask my friends later and try my best to answer it . On the issue of tutor , actually , probably 30 or 40 students have the same tutor as LLM study is a huge programme has over 200 students .It is hard to say that they are helpful or not .But I just met my tutor once at the outset of my study in a group meeting .Every tutor has their office hour and you can have an appointment with them and I guess all tutors they are actually teachers .Moreover ,you couldn’t choose your tutor and the school will allot every student a tutor . It would be good for you to know more about British legal system and how to study in common law system so that I recommend you a book called “learning the law “which you can easily get from LSE library .The tone in the book is approachable ,reader-friendly and empathizes .It is a helping hand at the beginning of studies and it nearly answers all the future questions in your mind including essay ,examination .One important thing is that don’t miss out the good opportunity to study legal English for free in LSE languages center where it offers two hours weekly class for law students . Although LSE is renowned for its efficient IT system ,I don’t think here is any good online forum for the school .Instead ,you can read the newspaper called “Beaver “which is produced by students .However ,here is one about all school LLM –www.llm-guide.com Don’t get any panic when you get the extremely long reading list .Obviously ,it is absolutely good for you to finish all the reading material .But ,the truth is that even native speaker cannot finish it on time .Please just make life more easy .Finally , please do not overestimate what you can get from the only nine months LLM study which counts 20 classe(every class has two hours) per course .Again ,enjoy your life in international city London .
