A great many people wanted to get a headstart in their quest for legal studies in HK and had persistently asked what textbooks they should get hold of and swing into reading action during the long summer vacation preceding their course start in Hong Kong.

Contrary to the suggested reading lists from HKU or CUHK or CITYU, I would suggest a different list for you guys to read,the list drew up by schools isn't the best in my opinion, as they don't have mainland student in their mind in selection of book titles, the majority of books suggested are not easily obtainable on the mainland, if the they are, they will cost you an arm and leg to procure them.

I suggest over the next less than 2 months, you try to read a few primers on English legal system, the common law tradition originated from England.You should have become aware as result of British Empire's ambitious expansionary policy, its law had disseminated far and wide to all these commonwealths with some modifications to suit the colonial master's rule of the vanquished lands.

a) English legal system

Two good primers on English Legal System at an affordable price(RMB 7.9), I would suggest the following titles

b) Hong Kong legal system

The legacy common law tradition has survived the transfer of sovereignty back to China,however, there is a Basic Law of HKSAR now,which is conveniently lablled mini-constitution of HK,working a macro legal framework in governance of Hong Kong,thus I suggest you try to briefly go through the Basic Law

It would also be helpful to gain a basic understanding of Hong Kong judiciary in terms of its structure, components and actual operation, official judiciary website should be the first port of call at below url. You will realize the Chapter IV Section 4 of the Basic law pertains to the judiciary.

c) Contract Law

Freedom of contract is the bedrock of Western political and legal philosophy , a good grasp of contractual doctrines, rules and case precedents are indispensable to absorb the quintessential elements of law of obligations(contract, tort and remedy),thus ,I suggest you obtain cheap and introductory textbooks on contract law.It came from the same series as legal system texts, equally affordable at RMB 7.9
