All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems.


In my response to this issue, it is practical and even desirable program to build a global university with the support of all nations aiming at solving the world's most persistent social problems. Obviously, this procedure will be beneficial to these social problems to some contents and that's why I advocate to this assertion. However, merely based on the development of a global university, it is impossible to solve all questions.

First and foremost, there is no denying the fact that building such a global university can help students understand each other including others' customs, religions, backgrounds, and values thus make possible for different students from different nations reach agreement in some controversial issues. Young people are the hope to the future and they will dominate the whole society and make world tendency in the future. How young people educated is extremely associated to what our future will be. Imagine that if different young people hold different views or even hostile views to certain issues, they will be highly possible in dispute to these issues in the future, making the most persistent social problems unable to be solved, more badly, this disputes will result in future conflicts and even wars. In return, these potential threatens will make such social problems worse. By building a global university, it provides a platform for those young people from different nations of the world to share their nascent ideas and unique thoughts. Moreover, besides mutual communication and understanding, global university provides young people different cultural backgrounds that in one certain country we shall never meet. With enough information and understanding to each other, it is easier for young people to discuss a certain social problem from a dialectic perspective, rather than from a demeaning or hostile altitude. The world's most persistent social problems need all efforts from all nations rather one nation or a group or nations. As discussed above, a global university is beneficial in solving these problems.

Admittedly these merits the global university has, however, merely based on building a global university can the world's most persistent social problems be solved is just a mirage. When consider what the world's most persistent social problems are, some may talk about poverty, greedy, wars, starving, environment pollution, civil rights, conflict between religions and so on. Take United Nations for example, this organization is founded in United States in 20th century and its member include almost every nation in our planet and aimed at reconcile interesting disputes among nations, solve social issues around world and make the world peaceful and prosperous . This organization is the largest and most powerful and even most influential organization in the world. But unfortunately, wars, poverty, starving, environment pollution and other problems still exist, although some of them have been assuaged. Such an organization like UN which is so powerful and influential cannot solve this problems no mention about a global university. The most persistent social problems have a variety of complexity that makes it difficult to solve. Some result from the history background and cultural briefs which we cannot distort or undermine, some due to the instinct of human-beings, such as greedy and aggression. Both of these elements cannot be changed. That's way we have to face continual wars and endless poverty that is why history witness so many conflicts.

In sum, and perhaps most importantly, the speaker seems to fail to take into account the fact that the world's most persistent social problems can only be assuaged not be eliminated. As I mentioned above, these problems will exist as it had thousand years ago. That does not mean building a global university is useless, on the contrary it is desirable in cultivating our new generations despite of its limited function in solving these issues. In any circumstance a good understanding to each other is the fundamental in assuaging these most persistent social issues. Moreover, it is meaningful for government of different nations to understand each other and make a consensus and a balance between these problems.
