In order for any work of art—for example, a film, a novel, a poem, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

对于Issue55这个题目，大部分同学都是部分赞同题目中的观点。也就是，虽然一份被大众理解的艺术作品是有价值的，但是并不是所有有价值的艺术作品都能够被大众理解。

赞同题目中的观点：
1.        商业艺术需要大众的理解
2.        流行艺术需要大众的理解

反对题目中的观点：
1.        许多艺术作品是艺术家个人的精神探索，不一定被大众理解，而且许多艺术作品是超前的，难以被大众理解
2.        大众的知识水平、理解能力各不相同，许多有价值的艺术不一定被大众理解
3.        一味地强调能否被大众理解可能会偏离艺术的本质
4.        其他因素，如艺术品的质量、艺术家的知名度以及艺术品的稀有程度等，也可以使艺术品有价值

在大家的作文中，个人感觉最特别的就是Batigoal0611的作文。这篇作文是基本赞同题目中的观点，这里摘录提纲如下：

1.        艺术源于人们的生活。艺术是人类精神的表达，因此离不开人们的理解。比如好的摄影师，是因为他可以通过镜头让人们产生某种共鸣；艺术点缀人们的生活，人们不会在家里挂一幅自己看不懂的画。艺术是一种教育，孩子们通过绘画来培养安静沉稳的性格；艺术是一种沟通方式，作家们专心著书是在通过这种方法与整体社会对话。
2.        也许有的人会说：一些艺术太晦涩了，不能理解。这里可能有两个原因。原因一：并不是他不理解这个作品，而是因为这个作品让人产生无限的联想和想象，因此有无数中解读。比如：名画 蒙娜丽莎 （Mona, Lisa），画中的微笑让每个人有不一些感觉，神秘，性感，庄严，哀伤。比如毕加索 (Picasso)的抽象画，有人觉得扭曲，抽象，有人觉得他的话热情喷放，大胆前卫。其实对艺术的解读没有绝对的对与错，大家的理解和各自的经历，生活，性格，爱好有很大关系。
3.        第二个原因：很多人认为不能理解一些艺术作品是因为艺术家们的视角，洞察力往往比其他前卫。很多作品或者现在不能理解，但是过十年，二十年就可以理解了。比如说：一些电影不被大众接受是因为对人性的探讨过于前卫和深刻，但是人们慢慢就能接受。Director Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" 有关同性恋的一个爱情故事。早在中国公映的时候并不太受欢迎，因为人们对同性恋的话题很陌生，不能接受，但是现在越来越多的人认为这是一部好电影。

感觉这样写是一个新的思路，将看似无法理解做了深入的分析，最后得出结论——有价值的艺术作品都是能够被大众理解的。这样分析逻辑上显得非常流畅。反而是一些折中型文章，写起来感觉是将两种不同的观点堆砌起来然后得出一个作者想要的结论，其实论证得并不充分。总之，这篇文章的思路可以作为借鉴。

但是Issue难写的一个地方就在于让步不好让。让不好就会导致前后矛盾。切这个让步点需要点想法

The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station.

Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to our news programs and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should expand our coverage of weather and local news on all our news programs.


Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

1. 赞同题目中的观点——许多时候人们是通过认同社会团体来定义自己的。

小至班级、社团，大至氏族、政党和宗教，人们经常通过认同自己所处的社会团体来对自我进行分类，来定义自我。

2. 反对题目中的观点——除去认同社会团体，人们有许多不同的方式来定义自我。

职业、肤色、地缘、国籍、民族等等因素都可以成为人们定义自我的方式。

职业：人们经常通过向别人介绍自己的职业来说明自己具有的技能或特点。例如，向别人介绍自己是程序员，说明自己会写代码；向别人介绍自己是教师，说明自己有教书育人的社会作用；向别人介绍自己是医生，说明自己有救死扶伤的精神。

肤色：例如非裔美国人等。《日光下的葡萄干》（A Raisin in the Sun）中的男主人公Walter说，“我们是第七代的黑人，我家的现在是我的父亲，我的祖辈一块砖一块砖地搬出来的结果。我们都很骄傲，我们不会搬出。”

Argument 148

The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.

We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But 80 percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumnae who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all female will improve morale among students and convince alumnae to keep supporting the college financially.

想象力和知识这类题目见仁见智，这里提供一个思路：

1. 想象力对于学术研究的推动力十分巨大。没有学者的想象力，广义相对论、普朗克常量、苯环构造、元素周期表等等科学理论可能会推迟几十甚至几百年才会被提出。

2. 虽然想象力很重要，但是题目中论点过于武断。在许多职业和学术研究中，知识和经验的重要性更为关键。例如在团体体育赛事中，如足球或篮球，有时一个想象力的传球或配合可能取得分数，然而胜利是来源于合理地战术与恰当的跑位和出手。再比如在医学中，为病人提供最有利的治疗是医生的医术，即医生对病理和药物的了解，这与想象力的关系并不大。

这里提供一个反对题目中观点的思路：

1. 题目中的观点看似十分合理。工资是对个人工作的肯定。篮球运动员工资的高低与他们在球场上的表现有直接关系；医生的工资是根据医术决定的；主持人的工资与他们的口才息息相关。学生的学术成绩是教师工作最直接的体现，因此教师的工资与学生的学术表现相关联显得有一定的道理。

2. 然而，教师的职责并不只有提高学生学术成就一个方面。帮助学生全面发展，解除学生心中的困惑，给予学生对于人生规划的指导等等方面都是教师的职责。因此不能够仅仅通过学术成就一点来对教师的工作作出评价。

3. 更进一步，如果实施这个政策，还可能带来一些消极的影响。例如，教师可能会采用高压政策来强迫学生学习以提高成绩，教师可能会只教授学生考试的内容或者只关心学生的学术工作而对学生德育丝毫不关心，这些做法都是对教育的偏差。

The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Balmer Island Gazette.

The population on Balmer Island doubles during the summer months. During the summer, then, the town council of Balmer Island should decrease the maximum number of moped rentals allowed at each of the island's six moped and bicycle rental companies from 50 per day to 30 per day. This will significantly reduce the number of summertime accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians. The neighboring island of Torseau actually saw a 50 percent reduction in moped accidents last year when Torseau's town council enforced similar limits on moped rentals. To help reduce moped accidents, therefore, we should also enforce these limitations during the summer months.
