Here is an IELTS part one speaking activity I did as part of a workshop with the Worldpath at Kiangsu-Chekiang College in Hong Kong, 11 May 2015. See some pictures of this workshop on this page.

One of the most important factors in raising your IELTS score is using connecting words to develop your answers in different directions, such as giving examples, talking about opposite ideas, giving reasons or results. This applies equally in the writing and speaking papers, but let’s illustrate it here with speaking:
The speaking interview in IELTS lasts 12 to 15 minutes and is divided into 3 parts. This speaking exercise we are about to do focuses on part 1 questions. That is, talking about yourself, your interests, your country, your culture, etc.

Using connecting words to develop your answers
Short answers like where are you from? :”Hong Kong.”
Do you like it? “Yes”.
are not acceptable. You need to develop your answers in different ways using connecting words.

You can add more details than you are asked for:
:I’m from X city. X city is……….”

Can you give me some examples of the attractions of X City? What makes it attractive to tourists?
“There are many attractions in my city. For example…
“For instance…..” “Like….”

Can you tell me another interesting thing about your city?
“Another point of interest about my city is………”
“As well as that there is……”

Can you tell me some reasons why you like your home town?

What about the opposite side? Is there anything you don’t like about it?

What are some of the causes of these problems?

I was really impressed with the level of English presented by the students of Kiangsu-Chekiang College at this workshop and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the teaching staff there on the success of their teaching methodology.
