38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
Since television comes into being, it seems to bring more happiness and convenience to our life. Whereas, when the discussion subject just focuses its function which helps people learn more, its advantages can not be superior than reading books
To begin with, watching television is not as initiative as reading books. Television programs is recorded by video cameras, after a tape has been finished, the time that the tape need to be reviewed is fixed. Audience is just passive to watch following its speed. The most usual status is that one has been totally absorbed into the program which has vivid graphics and sounds that control the two important organs---eyes and ears of human. However, reading books is a process that readers are communicating with authors, during a part that a reader understands smoothly, he can proceed fast. While, if he encounters obstacle to make clear what the meaning of the author, he can read slowly or even repeat several times. At the same time, once one has questions, opposite opinions, or even inspiration of one’s own, he can mark and write on the book. Usually, people can see a book full of records and marks in it. Though people could trouble to press a button and wait for tapes running back, he or she is absolutely impossible to insert his or her own words in the program. Therefore, reading books are more effective to true learning because readers not only put all their hearts into books but also transform the knowledge and thought into their owns, while television can not lead to such profound learning.
In addition, programs provided by televisions are not as authentic as ideas provided by books. Most of television works is a product with second processing which is just like fresh vegetables cook intensively and then lose their original tastes and nutrition. The novels by Louis Cha are famous and popular for most of Chinese people, meantime, his works turn to movies and teleplay to be appreciated on the screen. However, the essence of the books is limited by mainly about two aspects: the first is the actors’ performance, this point is key to attract the audience, if the actor can not show as the description in the novels, especially their manners of speaking and action, most people will still prefer books; the second is modification of the contents, on the one hand, movies and teleplay are usually affected by the directors’ personal inclinations, on the other hand, play books have to compact the original stories and then lose the coherence of original works. Thereby, reading books which mostly inspire human’s imagination and let people enjoy freely is more welcomed than watching television.
Admittedly, people also care about the broadness of their knowledge through convenient and quick access. At this point, watching television may be more frequently chosen for the reason that a lot of reporters or editors on television programs dedicate their time and energy to collect useful information and refine meaningful topics. Sometimes, the programs not only include investigations to social problems, but also put dialogues to analysis the root cause. People can not obtain up-to-date and overall knowledge through reading books, thus watching television has taken up much time in our daily life.
To conclude, watching television is a type of beneficial supplement which help expand one’s eyesight. While, Reading books need quiet surroundings , one’s heart calmed down and a desire to learn something favorite or essential. This pattern is bound to lead to deep thinking, good effectiveness and pleasing feelings. |
