BaXia小组第5次作业Argument140-michelle
Argument140:
The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
'During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college.'
The author of this report concludes that if without a raise and promotion, the[去掉the] Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college. To justify this conclusion the author points out that Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000, and she was popularity[popular] in students, even she has brought additional[additional可以去掉] money to university. I find this argument specious on several grounds.
First, the author fails to establish the causal relationship between the size of Thomas's class and the popularity she gained among students. It seems possible that her[she] has the largest class at the university owning to her flexible score system[这个观点很reasonable] or it is the university who advocate students to choose her class or only the classroom where she took class can accommodate such a large number of students,[classroom这点有些牵强了,一个教室很多老师都在用的] but not the popularity she gained from students.
Secondly, the author state that the money Thomas has brought to the university in research grants has exceeds her salary in each of the last two years. This is[去掉is] also cannot constitute a reason to give her a promotion or raise. As we know, teachers have a kind of responsibility to bring research grants to schools, and this is not the sound reason can be connected to her raise. As far as I know, if a teacher deserves to be given a promotion, he must win some awards or gain a high success in his research realm and so forth. Hence, according to the contribution said by the speaker may not be a reasonable condition to give Professor Thomas a raise[and promotion].
To further support the speaker's claim, she list another fact that in consideration of Thomas’ demonstrated teaching and research abilities (which the speaker does not explain clearly), university should give her a $10,000 raise and a promotion. Even if what the speaker has said is true, the university cannot be forced to give her a raise or promotion. [没有force啊…]On the other hand, if she really receives promotion, it also does not mean that she will not leave Elm City University.
[这一段的内容和上下重复了,有些多余]
Even assuming that if Thomas really wants to leave Elm City University, then nothing can prevent her leaving even she received what she deserves. In contrast, if she decided to stay in this university, even no raise or promotion, she will also stay here without leaving for another college. Thus the reason she decided to leave or not is really important.
In conclusion, as it stands the argument is wholly unpersuasive. To bolster it the author must show that Professor Thomas is a really popular teacher not only by means of demonstrating the size of her class but [加上一个by] other means like doing a survey. The author must also explain how she works in her research and what contribution she does to enhance the reputation of the whole university, or showing that the university do have a rule that teachers who bring research grant should be given a raise or promotion. Also useful would be any information about the reason she leaves.[她没有说要leave,这个才是文章中有错误的地方,而不会涉及到她要leave的原因] |
