Television is a major agent of social change in the 20th century. And that has become the very centre for family entertainment and news. Continuously developing technology enhances this revolution by connecting the television with internet which could update knowledge very rapidly. For that matter, television is regarded as the most important tool to gain information and knowledge in modern life. Even that, there seemed to be a tendency that a substitute watching TV for reading books that is a traditional method to learn. However, each has its advantages, television and books are not capable to win over each other.

With regard to the appealing traits and easygoing nature, television can help a lot in study. In most people’s view, firstly, watching TV is much more relax than reading books for the former provides what the latter could not offer that is image with sound directly which render information is easily acceptable. In the second place, advanced technologies make landing entrance, bus, airport and so forth where people would stay for some time facilitate with television. Those mobile televisions indeed improve the convenience of acquiring information. The last but not the least, it is possible that people all over the world could engage in the witness of historical events with television at the same time. The situation of a disaster, for instance, hurricane in Katrina and victims of that are known by TV to individuals who care abut them but could not go there. And more, the spacecraft launching in China this year is concerned by common people, and the live television coverage served as the witness to the significant events. All mentioned above are the very merits which are not owned by books. To keep pace with the sonic lifestyle, no other than watching TV is an optimal choice to obtain the latest information.  

On the other hand, reading books is an active process, where we can make choice of what, when and to which extent we want to learn. Compared to the fixed TV programs, individuals have much more rights of choosing in reading books. The subjects of TV programs are restricted to the numbers of channel. The 84 channels in America involve news, music, sports, geography and so on. Yet, the sea of knowledge is so broad that the finite channels could not include all of it. Then, people’s option is limited to the programs given by TV. At this time, people would find what they want to learn via reading books. By reason of, as an old and traditional carrier of knowledge, almost every branch of knowledge puts their harvest in the books since ancient times. If a student majored in traditional Chinese medicine want to learn the great work <<Native Chinese Plants>>, it is impossible to learn it through TV programs but books. What’s more, TV programs fix to a certain time to broadcast which enable people could not gain what they want to the moment. TV programs are produced to cover the most public: day-time for children and housewife, night-time for businessman is the general principle of broadcasting. And the programs cannot pause or continue for personal willingness, so people are passive in watching TV. In contrast, people could control above of all in reading books.

In addition, we should improve our self-control to utilize TV for obtaining knowledge, unless might be manipulated to make profits for TV station. It is necessary to realize that TV program is a production of medium, myriads of that aimed to make profits but not provide knowledge. The most striking example is the advertisement, which is the strongest killer to people’s time while watching TV. Set an assumption, interrupting an opera on television for a pet-food commercial is going from the sublime to the ridiculous.         

To sum up, obtaining various and numerous knowledge largely owe to reading books and watching TV. And the two are not mutually exclusively, but both serve a good way for learning. The crucial point is that people should keep in mind on what they really want and do not lose in the information explosion.
