ISSUE 38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS:483 TIME:0:45:00 DATE:2006-2-12
读书和看电视,到底哪个可以学到更多有用的东西?
disagree
I don not degree with the speaker's assertion that people can learn more by reading books than by watching television. By reading books, a person can learn far more than watching television, for its special functions which the television can never take the place of.
Firstly, you can take a book to anywhere you want without too much trouble than a television. You can take it to every corner of your room. When you want to have a coffee in your kitchen, then you cannot take your television to there from your living room. As for a book, the case will be totally different. When you are during a travel, you can take a book without too much consideration, for its small bulk and lightweight. As for a television, no matter how small and light it is, you would choose leave it in you home at the end, avoiding too much trouble it may take during your travel. So you can take a book to anywhere you want, and, hence learn at any moment you want from it.
Secondly, instead of a passive process of watching television, the reading is an active process which between the writer and the reader. Although a book cannot provide readers images of a place, an image, or an activity as vivid as a television, it can make a person give full play of his or her imagination. It is true that television can provide vivid image, which a book cannot. But just because of this, it leaves a completely open and broad space for the readers to imagine. When the television shows some place you had never seen, what watchers get is just the same image. There is just one choice for them-----they cannot make a decision. But in a book, which describes a place, you can draw a picture of that in your mind, and it changes according to the readers. Different readers have different pictures, and it can hardly the same. This is just a reading process, which a television cannot provide. Besides the information of that place, through this process, a reader can also get an active study which can strengthen his or her imagination—this is just a learning progress. In short, one can get far more during reading than just from a passive receive process from the television. Maybe you can remember a mathematics formula very quickly, when you are told the process of how to get it than through your own effort. But you can hardly forget it if you choose the later one.
Thirdly, the book can provide you a far broader range of knowledge to meet the needs of the readers, compared with the television to the watchers. The books have a much longer history than the television. You can get almost everything from the books in a library, from the past to the present, from the astrology to the geography, and from the science to the management, while the television can just provide you limited knowledge. Though ii has developed very quickly, the television is still limited in some areas. Books are well developed, compared with television. Imagine it, a normal mature adult and a still immature child, who has more knowledge? The answer is definitely the former one. The case is the same when it comes to the book and the television.
In sum, as a tool of learn I will choose books rather than televisions, for not only its convenience but also its active reading progress helps me learning which the televisions cannot offer.
I strongly believe that in the age of television, people can learn more by reading books than watching television, for its convenience to be taken and be read, having a long history, and developing a person's imagination through a active reading progress which the televisions can hardly offer.
