TOPIC: ARGUMENT145 - A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person-often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed-and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.
============================================
The arguer claims that anyone who snores should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more. To justify this argument, the arguer provides an evidence that people who snore are readily gain weight. Moreover, the arguer points out that sleep apnea can lead people to feeling tired during the day. Close scrutiny of this evidence reveals that it lends little credible support for the arguer’s assertion.
First of all, the arguer fails to provide any information that whether collected data is representative of the overall population. Lack such evidence, it is entirely possible that respondents are all older man, or particular group. Or perhaps the collected data will be done in someone districts or have limited respondents, just as there are 100 million people who snore in whole country but they only interview 100 people. Or perhaps people who snore indeed gain weight because of nutrition, individual life, or exercises. Therefore, the arguer provides no assurances that the data on which the argument depends is statistically reliable. Unless the data's respondents are representative of the overall population, the author cannot rely on it to show the relationship between weight gain and snore.
Additionally, the arguer fails to support the interruption of breathing can lead people to tired during the day to exercise. It is entirely possible that others factors can result in feeling tired during the day to exercise, such as making exercise in a long time, staying up every night, and working in a long time. Hence, before checking the causes of the tiredness during the day, the arguer cannot support that sleep apnea must result in the tiredness.
Even though the arguer provide evidence to support the above logical problems, the arguer cannot support that anyone who snores should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more. It is obvious that the arguer fails to render the relationship between 'eat less' and 'gain weight'. Perhaps some people eat less in daily but they still gain weight because of their condition of body. Or perhaps, due to eat less and exercise more, people lose weight but they still snore, and eventually people feel too tired during the day to exercise. Lack such evidence, the arguer cannot convince me that one who snores should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.
To sum up, the argument is not well-reasoned. To solidify the argument, the arguer should supply more concrete to demonstrate that whether the collected data can be representative of the overall population, the causes of feeling tired during the day, and the relationship between snore and fat-slim.
