38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Television emerges as a relatively new form of learning that poses a continuous threat to books that have dominated mankind's educational history since their (对应television觉得应该用its?) birth. Though many hold the viewpoint that reading books is of less importance in this fast-changing era since what we learn from books can easily be acquired from television. However, such intolerance toward books and blind adoration of television in terms of learning do not make any sense to me. Though television possesses some obvious advantages for learning, books, due to their exclusive features, provides (provide) the major channel to creation and accumulation of knowledge. (转折多次,感觉不太好,第一个though可以去掉,而且though可以换种说法)
Admittedly, television is more visual and eye-catching than books, which enables its application to some specific educational cases. One widespread use of watching television is in child education. Children tend to be attracted by moving images in TV programs which provide abundant useful knowledge and powerful models for children to imitate. One successful example is the child TV program called Sesame Street, which teaches children not only alphabets and words but also life lessons through the stories of animals. Besides child teaching, television is also very effective in spreading news among people. Thanks to (用在这里总觉得与上文不连贯,或者是少了过度)television, important news which used to take days or even months to be popularized will be immediately known to the whole world when it is broadcasted on television. Even in colleges, teaching of some visual subjects requires the assistance of television. For instance, the opera professor will choose(觉得用would like比较流畅) to show the complete and vivid records of Cat and Notre Dame on television, rather than rely on explanations of opera books.(加个连词会不会更好些) In some cases such as teaching children, spreading news and learning visual arts, television has proved to be a more powerful and effective method of learning.
Despite some useful application, television still cannot take the place of books in educating people due to its nature of entertainment and its dominant commercial purposes. It is important to notice that television programs are largely produced by TV stations that were set up to gain profit. By taking advantage of people's instinctive preference to be entertained rather than to be educated, television stations tend to introduce entertaining programs that can attract most eyeballs to raise profitability. Today's television is dominated by fancy programs, profitable commercials and soap opera whose educational implications are insufficient and even misleading. To attract more audience, some programs even contain violence, sex, leaving a negative effect on the society. It is the nature and purpose of television that forbids its application to education to a larger extent.
Unlike television, books are published to restore knowledge with educational purposes. Books lead readers to a world of galloping imagination and creative reproduction. While reading between lines, readers could have enough space to visualize the images and reinterpret the books. Moreover, by reading books, readers can improve literacy and enhance the ability to write, reason, argue and analyze, all of which are essential to reproduce and accumulate knowledge for the next generation. A typical case is the use of textbooks in teaching. (教科书的例子很好,可是感觉没讲清楚它的好处,叶子只用了一句没体现出它优势的话概括了啊)Students are encouraged to learn them and apply what they learn from textbooks to real life. It is these advantages of books that make them irreplaceable for centuries in educating human beings and accumulating knowledge, which can never be realized by fast-moving TV images. Besides, people can read books at any time, any place, but they couldn't watch TV unless they buy the expensive TV sets and receive TV signals.
In conclusion, though television as a visual medium is effective in some educational areas, it cannot replace books as the dominant means of learning. Through reading books, readers can improve literacy and enhance ability to write, reason, argue and analyze which are essential to reproduce and accumulate knowledge in the human history.
写得很好啊,不论从遣词造句还是论证上,很佩服叶子!有一些建议,供叶子参考,错了请见谅:D |
