144"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

Artists, filled with inspiration, express their profound thoughts by splendid wonders. Critics, filled with preciseness, evaluate artists' brilliant works by external remarks. Meanwhile, it is sometimes asked that who on earth gives society something of lasting value, the artist or the critic. It would be a common answer to this question by saying that merely the artist should own this honor, as the speaker asserts, however, unfortunately for us, this question admits of a more particular answer. We should not forget what the critics contribute on the lasting value as well.
These so-called forms of lasting value, such as novels, films, music, painting, etc, are indeed created by artists and are the eternal sparkles of an artist's life. When we enjoy the Sunflowers, the Fifth Symphony, the Modern Times and the War and Peace, we remember Van Gogh, Beethoven, Chaplin and Leo Tolstoy who left numerous precious milestones in human's history. Although these great artists have passed away, the Sunflowers are still blooming; the Fifth Symphony are being played in various theaters every day; the Modern Times still reminds us a legend of a actor and a country; the books titled War and Peace can be easily found in numerous libraries and bookstores. If the world was lack of these artists, there could not be such greatness of works even if countless critics flooded. Accordingly, we do not deny these artists and their achievement.
Nevertheless, there exists compelling reasons that we should respect critics as we hold artists in esteem. The first reason that we cannot ignore critics is that we are not able to understand the spirit of the artist's works without the critic’s evaluation. Most of those great novels, films, music and paintings are too abstruse to common to understand, which lead to critics having this responsibility to analyze the great works, then point out the highlights in an acceptive way. Generally speaking, the artists seemingly have the privities with critics, which causes they just create but explain their works, leaving the critics to express the core of the works to the common people in a common way. In addition, sometimes the artist's greatness is highly evaluated by the critics who live after them, illustrated by Van Gogh, which is a more substantiate evidence to show that we cannot neglect the critic’s contribution. Currently, we read, watch and hear masses of critical evaluations from newspaper, television and broadcast, which give us the illusion that there are much more critics than the artists. However, whether their judgment is positive or negative, at least they offer us various angles to understand the works better.
Another persuasive reason for the importance of the critics is that by these evaluations, the artists could get effective responses from the society, which will give them better reference to keep great creation. It is normal attitude that one, including the artists, desires others' advice and feedback after creating, which is just like that web blogers focus on the click rate and the number of replies of their pages. According to the critics, artists could know whether their works are valuable and accepted by common and whether there exists some mistakes in their cognition. What's more, the more people understand and enjoy art by the critics' work, the better environment, full of respect and tolerance to artists, the society becomes, which will encourage artists to create more wonders. Therefore, it is obvious that on creating something of lasting value, the critics are indispensable.
All in all, the society cannot lose the fertilization by the lasting valuable works originated by great artist; however, we also need the critics to construct a broader road towards the brilliance of art. Although Leonardo da Vinci has been away from us for hundreds of years, we are still recognizing his greatness by the critics' deciphering of a secret smile of a painted woman, Mona Lisa.
