TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 503

There were many celebrities in history, good or bad. However, with the development of our understandings , some turned out to be the one which completely contradicted our former views. Can the greatness of individuals be decided by people after them or their contemporaries? In my opinion, the greatness of individuals is objective, and unless we get the two essential factors--scientific thinking and enough message—which are required to make a true judgment, we cannot expect people at any time to decide.

Firstly, It is true that not all the greatness of diverse individuals can be recognized and understood by their contemporaries, not to mention be decided by them. Generally speaking, contemporaries as we common people, will always look at things and views with the ideas that are popular at that moment. And that's why people in Athens will support the verdict of Socrates’ sentence, and despised  Vangol's paintings during his life path, and the church  which was also patronized by the contemporary people would burn the learner Bruno who insisted on his scientific truth, which only turn out to be recognized by people nearly 100 years after his death. Therefore, we do not need to go very far to see that the values of the great individuals and the significance of the event at the specific time can not always be reflected by their contemporaries' will and support.

Nevertheless, does the meanings of the greatness of individuals cannot be decided by contemporaries equals that of they can and only can be decided by the people who live after these great persons? Obviously, the answer is no. And to be honest, we do not get as much information as our precedent at that time. We learn our past and the things happened before by history, rumors and etc. But what is history? History is the serials of events recorded by the recorder who think them meaningful. It is selective and can hardly cover the whole picture for the ignorance or the hardness of the recorders. Then without compelling proof that the decedents are well informed, we cannot expect a rightforth and reasonable perception of the greatness of individuals before.

In fact, in my opinion, the greatness of individuals before is somehow objective, which means no matter what people at any time think of them, their greatness cannot be changed a bit. And if we consider that our human beings'  level of understanding can be developed all the time during the course of human history, there will always be a day that we finally come to realize the greatness of some individuals before, no matter how severe they were once misunderstood.

Therefore, I think that whether the greatness of individuals can be recognized and decided by their decedent or contemporaries lies on whether people at that time get a scientific way of thinking and enough information to make the right judgment and decision. And if people possess the two critical factors, obviously, they will reflect and decide the greatness of individuals before them or at the same time.

Generally speaking, contemporaries as we common people,(common people, contemporaries as us,…) will always look at things and views with the ideas that are popular at that moment. And that's why people in Athens will support the verdict of Socrates’ sentence, and despised  Vangol's paintings(此句产生了歧义,是雅典人无视梵高的作品吗?或许可以改为and most of Vangol's paintings are despised)  during his life path(during his life), and the church  which was also patronized by the contemporary people would burn the learner Bruno who insisted on his scientific truth, which only turn out to be recognized by people nearly 100 years after his death. Therefore, we do not need to go very far to see that the values of the great individuals and the significance of the event at the specific time can not always be reflected by their contemporaries' will and support.(这句是说:“不用多说,我们就能理解为什么这些当时的伟人不被世俗认可”,为什么不用多说,这是基于你前面的如果有深入的分析,可是整段下来,只有一句common people will always look at things and views with the ideas that are popular at that moment的有效评论,可见前面很多例子堆砌着,展开不够深入,这样这句“不用多说”就成了败笔,症结在于分析不充分。

Nevertheless, does the meanings of the greatness of individuals cannot be decided by contemporaries equals that of they can and only can be decided by the people who live after these great persons?(这句意思有了,但我估计老外很难看明白,好像不对) Obviously, the answer is no.(这句不好,很僵硬,有点说教,委婉一点,北美280篇里有很多设问后的回答方式,可以看看)  And to be honest, we do not get as much information as our precedent at that time. We learn our past and the things happened before by history, rumors and etc. But what is history? History is the serials of events recorded by the recorder who think them meaningful. It is selective and can hardly cover the whole picture for the ignorance or the hardness of the recorders. Then without compelling proof that the decedents are well informed, we cannot expect a rightforth and reasonable perception of the greatness of individuals before.(And to be honest….,这里写的不错,有一条思路在潜移默化的牵引读者)

In fact, in my opinion, the greatness of individuals before is somehow objective, which means no matter what people at any time think of them, their greatness cannot be changed a bit. And if we consider that our human beings'  level of understanding can be developed all the time during the course of human history, there will always be a day that we finally come to realize the greatness of some individuals before, no matter how severe they were once misunderstood.(前面破论,这里立论了,但是there will always be a day that we finally come to realize the greatness of some individuals before与第一段的we cannot expect people at any time to decide相左,自我矛盾,而且这里有没有做分析,犯了老毛病,读者可以反问虽然自己的观点不正确,可是凭什么你的观点就是对的?)

Therefore, I think that whether the greatness of individuals can be recognized and decided by their decedent or contemporaries lies on whether people at that time get a scientific way of thinking and enough information to make the right judgment and decision. And if people possess the two critical factors, obviously, they will reflect and decide the greatness of individuals before them or at the same time
