Is the concept of "individual responsibility" a necessary fiction? The speaker asserts so. From my standpoint of view, for the well being of the whole society, it is necessary for everyone to stick to his or her own responsibility, and that is far more than a fiction. The speaker further concludes that people's behavior is largely determined by outside forces instead of their own choice. I concede that as society animal, no denying that the behaviors of people will be affected by the outside world, but people still have the right to choose, thus, the expectations should be put on the individuals to accountable for their own actions.

To begin with, it is each individual and the relations and reactions between them that construct the society. It is hard to image a society that no one could be responsible for their own behaviors. Though in the democratic society, people's actions are largely constrained by the laws, there are still some aspects not covered by laws and calls for the individual responsibility. Given the phenomena throughout the internet as a good example, nowadays, with the development of technology and the widely use of internet, to standardize the norms on internet becomes more and more different, especially considering people could be anonymous on the internet and the relative laws are not that complete. In this case, the behaviors of people are largely depend on their own personal responsibilities. The innumerous  pornographic novels, movies all through the internet which caused many crimes especially harmful to the adolescents and the frequently reported cases on the break of on-line personal accounts to stole money away all prove how dangerous it would be if people lack the basic responsibilities for the society.

Just as society including the relations and reactions of each individual, it could not be denied that the actions of people have largely been affected by the outside forces. The custom, the environment one lives in, the people he or she touches with, will all affect a person's behavior more or less. But that does not necessarily mean people do not have the right to make their own decisions. One might argue that in doing something, "I have no other choices and I have only to do that thing". That hears more like an excuse rather than an argument, since in one's life, the situation that no choices are very rare. When one decides to do something, he has give up the opposite part of this thing -- the other choice to choose. It is clearly that though affected by things like this or that, the final decision is actually be people themselves, and those decisions, once be made, people should be accountable for that.

Simply put, if everyone will not be responsible for their own actions, and use the excuse that the decision were actually made by some outside forces, the society will be find in a state of chaos and that will be a great disaster. One could image an extreme example that somebody who murdered one person asserts that he did not make the decision to kill him, just because some other reasons that forced him to do that. In this kind of case, will the judge announce the innocent of that person because “he has no other choice, but to kill one person” as the reason to let him loose from his responsibilities? If that is the case, then is there any safety one could feel in the society?

To sum up, the actions of people will definitely be affected by the outside forces around them, but that does not be the reason that one could not be responsible for his or her behavior. Only in a society that each individual will be accountable for responsibilities, one could expect a more prosperous society and in turn the more harmony society will inspire the individual responsibility and makes it not just a fiction.
