ARGUMENT 10
The argument recommends that regulation should be taken to retail milk prices in order to ensure both lower prices and and an adequate supply of milk for consumers.To justify the assertion,the author cites a report that the number of diary farms are 25 percent greater than before throughout the country. The speaker also points out that the price of milk have doubled compared to that of ten years ago. However ,these evidences fail to lend strong support to the recommendation.
One problem with the argument is that the increase of the number of dairy farms does not necessarily indicates the production of milk.Since the speaker are not able to provide sufficient evidence,it is quite possible that the average of all dairy farms suffer from a decline while the total number does augment.For this matter ,it is just aslikely that the whole production of milk in the market decrease rather than 增加.
Even if the milk supply does increase ,the author unfairly assumes that farmers receive excessive profits .Yet the author cannot convince me without providing a cost and revenue analysis for it is a well-known fact that the success of one business is the function of revenue and expenses .It is entirely possible that the cost of operating each farm grow faster than that of the prices and therefore farmers make less profits instead than they do in the past.
Even assuming that excessive profits are received by the farmers ,the speaker overlooks the fact that there is no certain correlation between the supply and prices .A series of factors may contribute to the up and down of milk prices, for instance inflation ,thus the whole circumstances of the market needed to be considered when considering whether the local prices is beyond the normal standard.
Given constraining of the milk prices are to be taken up ,the result may be that farmers choose to decrease their daily production to ensure gaining profits. If this is true , obviously the final goal to ensure an adequate supply of milk for consumers can not be fulfilled .
To sum up ,the conclusion reached in this argument is invalid and misleading. To make the recommendation more convincible , the author should provide a thorough analysis of cost and revenue of the milk market. To bolster the recommendation we need more information to ensure that an adequate supply of milk for consumers will not be affected as s result of the suggestion .
