题目:ISSUE69 - "Government should place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development"
字数:608 用时:00:45:00 日期:2008-8-20 20:40:04
Development of science plays really important role in modern society. The new inventions and technology are always based on the scientific research and development. Government should encourage the scientific research for they always bring us new ideas and theory which can bring us goods and convenience. However, scientific research can sometimes bring problems. That is to say, government should pay proper attention to the scientific research.
As Karl Max has ever said (and I paraphrase it):"Science and technology is the most important things in production process." The importance of science should never be ignored by any government in any society. In fact, most of the government in the world places a lot of money and attention on the scientific research. Watt invented the steamer so during his research, and then the government and some merchant began to produce such machine so it can change the world. Edison made the bow and finally it bring light to every family.
Every government likes these kinds of research, because such development can brings economical advantages and profit. In fact, when the government uses the successful scientific theory in producing the product, the scientific research becomes a way to make money. Cars, guns, the big ship and the luxury cloths are all based on the scientific research. Scientists and researchers tell the factory what kind of material should be used, what kind of process is the most efficient and the best style this year is this one or that one. When the workers learn these information’s, they can make the excellent production which bring the high profit.
Or the government likes to place money on some academic areas. If someone who is expert in physics or chemical and after years of research he/she wins the Nobel Prize, the whole country can be proud of this person. He/she brings the honor, wins the respect of other countries. These advantages cannot be bought by money. Actually I believe these kinds of advantages seem better than the substance advantages.
However, scientific research and development can also cause problems and dangerous. The nuclear weapon is a good example. When Einstein found the nuclear energy happily, he cannot imagine that years later it can be the deadly weapon. Today some countries have this weapon, and we will never forget the power this weapon has because we all remember the big explosion in Japan during the World War II. Another example is the drugs. Nowadays more and more people, especially the teenagers turn to use drugs. The drugs become purer and purer, and this can contribute to the researchers. They try new ways to condense the drugs so it can be more exciting. They result is, it becomes more dangerous for it is easier to make people addict. Government should of course take actions on these illegal areas.
Unjust competition can be another bad result of the scientific research. The cordial helps the athletes have better behaviors but it is also unfair to other competitors. People even cheat in the research result because they want to gain the respect and interest. Zhou Zhenglong, who won the national scientific prize last year in China for his great contribution in researching an extinct tigers, was caught by the police last month. His pictures and materials about the tiger were regarded as fake after other researchers’ identify. So the government should place some restrictions on such studies, at least take some actions to judge the result.
In sum, government should encourage the scientific research and development because it is really important to such a technological world. However, government also should place appropriate restrictions on them for avoiding the possible dangerous results. |
