The speaker asserts that today is so new and complex that looking back for an understanding of the past supply little guidance for living in the present. I concede that modern society is full of new and complex phenomenon, nonetheless in my view we can still gain guidance from the past for the reason that the new and complex phenomena derive from the past and on this basis knowledge of the past may help us to solve some problems, whether at individual or social level.

Whether rightly or wrongly, we all share a brief that contemporary society is more complex and newer than the past. However, this brief is not to say that studying the past makes no sense in that people are able to find out the new and complex phenomena are how to bring to and how to develop to the situation in the present, and then understand and solve the problem better. For example, this is nowhere more persuasive than the greenhouse effect that scientists find that carbon dioxide primarily lead to the phenomenon through the comparison between the present and the past. So in my view the understanding of the past still provides guidance for the present not only at the personal level but also at the social level.

At the individual level, we can learn lessons which prevent us from mistakes and obtain incentive to better ourselves from the story of great figures in history. Consider, for instance, Beethoven who was entirely deaf while persist in composing finally is one of the most famous and influential composer of all time. His life tells us the importance of persistence. At the same way, the watergate involved president Richard M. Nixon which make Nixon the first resignation of a U.S. Present tell us that honesty is more important than any other benefits when we are in a dilemma.

At the social level, the study and understand of history can facilitate the solution of existing problems between different societies or countries, such as the conflict between Israel and Palestine, dating back to the history of Jerusalem we can know that the two countries both have records which demonstrate Jerusalem belongs to their own county. From the historical view, the conflict is not a simple question which can be solved by war while dispassionate negotiation is a better solution.

To sum up, I admit the new and complex of today but I disagree with the speaker's conclusion that an understanding of the past has little utilization for the study of the past can make us to find the real reason which cause the problem no matter at the personal level or at the social lever and then to make it up.
