."No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their
knowledge and experience to that field of study."

Started: 16:17

Main points:
Agree.
1.        No one field of study could develop on its own. Different fields of studies could supplement each other. Exp, math and physiology.

2.        The combination of relevant subjects creates new dimension of study and broaden our view of the world, thus contribute to the development of the human society. Examples, economics and sociology combine to form socioeconomics.

3.        The inadequateness of focusing solely on one subject could narrow down one’s scope and hamper the development. We need to out source.

Issue essay:

I agree with the assertion above, just as I would support the general education in universities. It is long debated that if universities should provide general education or professional trainings to students. Some claims that universities should just focus on conveying professional skills and knowledge to their students, for many students, if not all, attend universities, pursuing a diploma as an advantage in the job market. So, the general education seems a waste of time.  This may be true to some, however, as far as I am concerned, general education is a supplement to our highly specialization society and, to the contrary of what the opponents claimed, it helps to further ones’ study in a specific field.

Firstly, no one study could develop on its own. Knowledge dose not evolve alone, rather, it is a concomitant of other components of human society, as the progress of civilization.  Thus, one field of study, from the date it was initiated, would inevitably be affected by other elements of the society.  When we focus on one field of study, we need knowledge of other fields to help us to understand the one we are focusing on. The most convenient example of this is the relationship between physiology and math.  As we may know, math and physiology are closely related to each other. Many theories of physiology are stated in forms of mathematical formulas. Without the help of mathematics, some theories may be extended to pages of explanation and it is not convenient to apply to use and state.

Secondly, it is not unusual that relevant subjects combine to form another new subject, which is a progress in human society. Some fields of studies are combinations of different areas of study. To name a few, the socioeconomics, the ecolonomics, etc. These combinations of different studies broaden the scope of study fields and help us to analyze or solve social problems in a new way. For example, the socioeconomics lend us a new aspect from which we could understand that any social conflict is, to some extend, no more than an economical conflict between different parties. And thus the government could reconcile the conflict between different parties in consideration of the profit of most, if not all, the social parties, when projecting a new regulation.

Finally, the inadequateness of focusing solely on one subject could narrow down one’s scope and hamper the development.  Our society has been highly specification, which results in the lack of tolerance of differences between different culture, different ideas and different values, the lack of common sense, the lack of adaptabilities.  To be a versatile worker in the future and acquire a full development of personality, we need to source out from the outside.

To draw a conclusion, no one field of study could develop by itself, without the help from other areas of study. So, in light of this, we need general education to supplement our pursuit of one specific field of study.
