appear to这边理解又出现偏差。不解。整句 what in contrast to the colonies是一个意群，davis一个意群。appear to 和to be perculiarly souhern 的意思和语法始终搞不懂。这逻辑上是什么关系啊！？

擦！不好意思。我看着看着又看明白了。。这边最靠近appear 的 to 其实并不是真正的prep ，而是 to David 的意思。。，这里to David 是哥插入语。。。。无奈了。不给暗示啊！！
