TOPIC: ARGUMENT143 - The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a national newspaper.

"Your recent article on corporate downsizing* in the United States is misleading. The article gives the mistaken impression that many competent workers who lost jobs as a result of downsizing face serious economic hardship, often for years, before finding other suitable employment. But this impression is contradicted by a recent report on the United States economy, which found that since 1992 far more jobs have been created than have been eliminated. The report also demonstrates that many of those who lost their jobs have found new employment. Two-thirds of the newly created jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages, and the vast majority of these jobs are full-time."

*Downsizing is the process in which corporations deliberately reduce the number of their employees.

经济危机存在 – 三分之二的人的工资高不证明没有经济危机
经济危机导致削减人数 - 岗位多经济危机还是存在
削减人数导致失业 – 工人找到新工作不等于解决了失业问题
统计,competent workers

In this argument, the author asserts that an article which alleges that the downsizing result from the economic hardship causes competent workers lost job is misleading. The author cites that a recent report found that far more jobs have been created than been eliminated and workers find their new employment soon. In order to substantiate his conclusion, the author points out two-thirds of the newly created jobs tend to pay above-average wages, and most of the new jobs are full-time. A careful examination toward this argument we will find it is not as persuasive as it stands.

The major problem of this argument is that the arguer fails to provide concrete evidence to disproof that there is an economic hardship in the United States. Higher salary in newly created careers does not affect the credibility of the economic crisis. Maybe the newly created jobs which superior than the average wages results from the average wages have decreased sharply. It is likely that the higher salary results from the newly created jobs have a higher requirement for employees, so during serious economic hardship days there still can be comparatively higher than ordinary ones. In all, no matter how many jobs exist, there still can be economic problems in our society.

Even if we accept the author's assumption that there is a serious economic hardship, it still fails to deny the downsizing. Downsizing can happen even when more jobs created. More jobs created do not lead to more jobs occupied. Maybe new jobs demand certain academic background that most people do not satisfied, so they stay vacant. Even more jobs created and occupied the possibility of a downsizing in industry still exist. The author fails to attack the casual relationship between the downsizing and the lost of job opportunities.

Facing downsizing because of economic problem might easily lead to lost job. No matter how many people find their new employment, whether they keep the new job for long, whether they get enough salary, whether they get considerate job satisfaction, and how long it takes them to get a new job is open to dispute. We need further information to warrant that they really get out of the trouble that they lost their job. What's more, even most workers get their new jobs, the exact situation about the competent workers as the article cites is unknown. In addition, the vast majority of these jobs are full-time does not necessarily strengthen the author's argument that workers get good new job. Full-time work may result from time-consuming work or strict requirement of the company.

The conclusion also lacks credibility because the survey which the argument relies is too vague to be informative. We get no information on the authority of the survey. How many people participated in the investigation and whether they're representative are problematic. Whether questions in the questionnaire are misleading is unwarranted. We get no information about random sampling. In all, whether the results of the survey stand for the overall situation of the society is not as solidify as it stands.

In conclusion, the author must present more facts to demonstrate that there is a serious economic hardship and directly leads to downsizing and cause the workers lost there job. We also need further information to proof that the survey is valid and persuasive. Moreover, I would suspend my judgment about the credibility of author's opinion until the author can provide concrete information to demonstrate the situation of the competent workers but the overall situation. Otherwise, the arguer is simply begging the question throughout the argument.

b1and2偏题了。
b3攻击没有对。
你思路可能有点问题。自己好好想想A的写作和I的区别。还有A的攻击是基于什么和怎么展开的。
看看其他组员的文章参考下思路。
