Merely based on the evidence found recently that archaeologists unearthed a Palean basket in Lithos, the author draws a conclusion that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean. To support the conclusion, the author also points out that Lithos is a village across the Brim River from Palea as well as that the Brim River is so deep and broad that the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat. Furthermore, he cites the evidence that no Palean boats have been found yet. At the first glance, the argument seems to be of some persuasions, but further comtemplation discloses that more specific evidences are needed to evaluate the argument.
First of all, although we have already known that the Brim River is very deep and broad at present, we don’t know whether this river was not only shallow, but also narrow enough so that Paleans could cross it without any facilities thousands of years ago. Therefore, the data about both depth and width of the prehistoric Brim River are extremely significant for us to judge the conclusion. If it shows us that the river was shallow and narrow enough for Paleans to walk across, there is no doubt that the argument would be unpersuasive.
In addition, even though the Brim River was as deep and broad as today’s, we still need the evidence that whether the ancient Paleans had other facilities, except for boat, to cross the river. As we all know, not only can boat be used to cross the river, but also wood raft can be utilized as an aquatic vehicle. Paleans might make use of wood raft to accomplish this seemingly tough task. Hence, if archaeologists could dig out the remains of other types of aquatic vehicle, the author’s conclusion would seem to be unreliable.
Moreover, even if the ancient Paleans didn’t have any opportunity to take these baskets to Lithos, we still need the evidence that whether there were other people, who were able to cross the river or who might be the descendants of Paleans, contributing to the spread of Palean baskets. If we could discover the vestige of these people and their migratory movement, it would serve to undermine the claim that the Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.
All in all, to evaluate the argument thoroughly, we still need the evidence that have been mentioned above.
