WORDS: 647 TIME: 1:15:00 DATE: 2006-3-23
The speaker asserts that astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society. The fact is, nonmainstream areas cover the most important spiritual problems people concerns while their theories are unproved and quite difficult to be proved. In my opinion, vital means importance which stands on the correctness and being necessary, by affect people's daily life a lot. Such hardly can be called science areas are all around and affect our life a lot, but their correctness and being necessary are still open to doubt.
Nonmainstream areas denote people's future through star, talk about people's personality through one's appearance or hands, and we can easily observe that they influence our life a lot. There are websites and magazines talking about astrology all the time. There is wizard whom is believed can tell people's future. Chinese people consider the three lines in hand mean fortune, love and longevity of life and regard different shapes of one's head to be of different personality. The section about astrology in websites and magazines always become people's favorite, many people come to the wizard ask for future, and many Chinese are busy predicting their future through their hands and appearance while watching others' and being watched as well. Such areas appear everyday everywhere around the world.
But with the only information that such areas are a lot in quantity and widely existed in the world can not proof the nonmainstream science to be vital. One of the most important reasons is whether they're correct is problematic. No matter how many people feel they are correct or believe in them, without any specific experiments to proof that they can predict future and there is any relationship between the stars and future, appearance and personality, such science might be misleading. In one of the Psychology projects I participated myself, we give questionnaires to over 10,000 people, asks 147 questions widely concerned about their habit, personality and development, as well as the specific born time. As the astrology judgment depends on constellation, which bases on the month one was born. But the result does not report a single correlation between any personality dimensions and the month they born. So the correctness of such science is quite unwarranted. We can hardly find any accesses to check those theories. Even we have tried we find little persuasive information to support the theories. What's more, even we find some correlation by chance they can not be causation as the predictions assumed.
No matter they are right or not, whether they are necessary need further discussion. Even people concern them everyday, they may be quite well or even much better without them. It is likely that people do not need them at all. They provide a false satisfactory or panic for people. Some people are told they should ask for help from certain paranormal strength instead of go to hospital when they got ill, such direction is a disaster for human beings. The "Century Prediction" says that there will be something terrible in the moment when 2,000 comes through which, a lot of people injured from a long-time panic. The existence of such science sometimes meet people's psychological need, but it also gives suggestions regardless our reality.
In conclusion, the nonmainstream areas do not meet the requirement about correctness, or they need to be necessary as a vital role. Though they endure a variety of acceptance all over the world, their importance is unwarranted. Such science like astrology, fortune-telling, psychic or paranormal pursuits are hard to be judged. They can rarely be raised to a science experiment and be proved in the laboratory. However, recent research shows that they do not have a significant correlation. In the second place, no matter they are correct or not, human beings may not need the disturbed science. It provides far more problems than the limited benefit which they can console to our society. In all, with the only confirmed information that they are popular, it is difficult to conclude that they are vita at all.
