TOPIC: ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."
WORDS: 452          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2007-3-5

==================================================================================

In this statement, the speaker asserts that it is useless to understand history to guide us in the present, because things are becoming more and more complex and challenging than ever before. I agree with the speaker insofar as that in many cases, things are getting more complicated. However, my intuition tells me that studying history is, by any means, beneficial for both individuals and society as a whole.

Admittedly, dramatic science and technology advancement has brought profound changes to nearly everywhere of our human society that may have a great difference with the past time periods. Consider the over-consumption of the infinite natural resources, especially on the part of the developed countries toward developing and under-developed countries. Or consider the growing environmental crisis with an explosive population all over the world which has never been before. And even the cultural and traditional heritages which are on their way of assimilation or extinction under a globalization context. For all the factors mentioned above, it might be tempting for us to think that by looking back to the past, we acquire little guidance, for so many changes are undergoing around our society.

Although many things are undergoing significant changes over the last few centuries, there are still many problems which never changed over the course of human history. Such intellectual struggles may include: what is the meaning of life; does God really exist; mind or material, which comes first, etc. And consider the enduring social problems of hunger, war or the discrimination and prejudices toward certain groups of people. However hard we human tried to solve these problems, we still cannot have the right answer. Yet, by studying history, we learn to understand them, and try to find a feasible way -- that is, by tolerance and respect, to create a world that is better than ever for every member of society to live in.

Furthermore, we can benefit a lot in our everyday life and as a member of human society through studying history.  Firstly, on the individual level, learning about the wisdom, courage and tenacity of great explorers, leaders and other achievers in the history inspires us to make similar contributions, or at least to face bravely our own fears and foibles as we travel through our life. Secondly, on the societal level, history teaches us to avoid and prevent from making the same mistakes that people have made in the past. For example, any political authority which is built on the basis of suppression of the individual freedom would inevitably fall in the end.

In the final analysis, although the world is now a place replete with changes and challenges, we have a lot to learn from the history for both individuals and society. Just as a saying goes: to unlock the present, we must look into the past.

观点是有保留的赞成,但是我感觉赞成不是那么好写,可能写历史的积极作用更好些,也就是写成是有保留的反对。第二段写的很好,论证的很不错。
