The speaker asserts that only when education is specifically designed for individual needs and interests of each person can it be truly effective. It's obvious that when a person is doing something which is related to his interests and meets his needs, he/she will be doing that with great inspiration and power behind. In this way, one would start learning by himself without being compelled and of course this kind of education is effective.

However, in my view, education is not something only related to the individuals but also to the whole society. Effective education would have two aspects: meet individual needs and bring the society more contributions. We see that schools have a variety of courses and some of them are always hot and attractive as management, computer science, medical and biological  courses, while at the same time, mathematics and physics and such kind of basic courses are few people's choice. This may lead to a lack of human resources in some areas. And that's why we still have required courses and elective courses.

Secondly, sometimes people need a variety kind of knowledge to meet their needs while this kind of knowledge may not always meet their interests. In this way, when people are being educated in college, it's necessary to for everybody to learn some basic courses which's useful to everybody. The fact that the newly discoveries and inventions are both on the common things of two or more different areas suggests that when a student whose major is mathematics is studying, he/she may also need some knowledge on physics. Maybe physic is not something that he's interested in, he still need it.

Thirdly, another function of education is to satisfy the needs of the society and make the world better. Everybody is willing to do something clear and easy and earns a good income to live better. However, this kind of individual thoughts may lead to the stop of the world. We see if Edison didn't experiment on over 1000 kind of materials, we may never share the convenience that electricity brings us. If the Wright brothers didn't have a try on making something that can take us to the sky, we may take days or even weeks to go to Paris from New York by ship rather than taking a flight in just several hours. As we can see, education is changing the world in all time, people learn and people invent, which results in the progress of the society as well as the whole world.

To sum up, people have their individual interests and needs, as well as the options to choose what to learn. And it's clear that education will be effective under this circumstance. However the truth is that education is not something only related to the individuals but also to the whole society, it'll give you a better career and make you a better life but meanwhile you should also make some contribution to the society and only in this way can we make education truly effective and makes the world a better place to live.
