TOPIC: ARGUMENT179 - The following is a memorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the Cedar Corporation.
"It would be a mistake to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. It is the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices have risen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals for people on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me that they no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience 'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is a family-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. I recently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious-an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction."

The argument is well presented, but not thoroughly well-reasoned. By making a comparison of the company Good-taste, an enterprise offer a higher price food supply and refuse to provide meals for people on special diets, with the company Discount Foods, a family-owned local enterprise offers a various menu of fish and poultry, the arguer for hiring Discount Foods instead of Good Taste to supply food for their employee cafeteria next year seems logical. A careful examination of it , however, would find how groundlessly it is.
In the first place, which is also the major problem, the argument is based on the gratuitous assumption that Discount Food have a lower price campared to Good Taste, just for the sake of Discount Food is a family-owned local company. Admittedly Good-Taste is the second most expensive caterer in the city, and its prices have risen in each of the last three years, but it doesn't follow that Discount has a much lower price. It's entirely possible that the most expensive caterer in the city is very Discount Food. Moreover, to say the price of Good Taste have increased in each of the last three years, it is also a superfical impression to determine Good Taste have a higher price, that is because the arguer failed to consider the average price in the whole city. Perhaps the food price in this city has sharply increased in the last three years, therefore, the case of Good Taste's adjusting of its price according to a market fluctuation is quite normal.
In addtion, the experience of only three employees is also too early to determine that service system in Good Taste company is unbearable. Considering some inevitable differences among people's taste and preference, it is absurd to require any carter to meet the needs of all the employees.
In the second place, again, as to the evidence that Discount Food provides a various menu of fish and poultry, and a recent sample of lunch the arguer taken in one of Discount branches is delicous. But the arguer failed to consider some other possibilities. Perhaps fish and poultry dishes are specialized in Discount Food, but when it comes to other dishes, the menu of them are quite limited. In addition, a sample of lunch is not persuasive enough for us to bear the assumed outcomings. Chances are that this sample are fancy prepared, and its real condition is not reflected here.
In conclusion, the arguer for hiring Discount Food instead of Good Taste Food seems reasonable as presented above since the arguer is acting in his well meaning and want to protect the benefit of its employees. However before any final decision is made about hiring Discount Food, arguer should evaluate all the possible  dimensions of its service as well as its price.
