TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
提纲:
4.总结。
The speaker asserts that scandals in every field can be useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. I agree
insofar as the scandals play an important role in revealing the latent problems. However, too much attention to the scandals may have an exactly opposite effect
when they are overstated and specious.
Admittedly, it' true that scandals expose some problems that cannot be seen in other ways because the speakers and reformers have to take responsibility for their public
affairs. Also no one could deny that scandals are more effective than them when it comes to attracting public attention in a short time. And the attention result in better solution and reform to the problems, whether they are in politics or academia. An apt illustration involves the Watergate Event, which began with Nixon administration's abusing power and lying to the pubic. It ended in the first resignation of a resident in American history, the conviction and imprisonment of twenty five officials of the Nixon administration. Consequently, Watergate Event provoked Congress to pass several pieces of legislation designed to curb executive power of president, which
do good to a honest government. When it comes to academia, scandals such as Dr. Woo-Suk Hwang's clone event of forging experimental results, not only make the scientists understand the academic moral standard well, but also give a alarm to government to avoid academic fraud. In this sense, scandals is helpful in finding and
solving the problems.
However, when admitting the positive influence of scandals, we cannot turn a blind eye to the side effect that the scandals may bring to us. Firstly, overstated scandals
are likely to make us judge a person unfairly and distract us from more important social issues. Let us return to the Watergate Event mentioned above, it is ridiculous to
think Nixon as a complete failure just because of this scandal. As a matter of fact, Nixon made great contributions to America's economic development and international
foreign affairs. Just during his times, America began to make diplomatic relations with Soviet Union and China, which used to be tense all the time. In the same way,
in 1972, too much attention had been put to this scandal so that other pressing issues such as unemployment and health-care reform were neglected by the public.
Secondly, the media reports are mainly profit-based and entertaining so that their reports to the scandals are often bombastic and lacking in credibility. In order to attract the public, they could say a star has extramarital love though he just had a meal with a pretty lady. And they never get tired of making a fuss about the celebrity's little mistake. These bring great harm to the innocent people. In the entertainment area, it is common for a singer to commit suicide because he cannot bear the media's pressure. In political area, these specious scandals might bring an end to one's political career, no matter how gifted he is in politics. Thus, we should not believing blindly in the reports about these scandals.
In sum, scandals indeed have the ability to attract public attention as the speaker asserts, and contribute to find and solve the problem. However, i have to point out that the function of scandals is limited, and it is unwise and even dangerous for people to overemphasize the effect of scandals. |
