题目:The purpose of many advertisements is to make consumers want to buy a product so that they will "be like" the person in the ad. This practice is effective because it not only sells products but also helps people feel better about themselves.

The speaker asserts that advertisements are effective because they not only sell products but also help people feel "be like" the personal in the ad, therefore feeling better about themselves. It may be true that such advertisements can promote sales in the short term, whether such actions would not be effective in the long run depends on many other factors.

It may seem tempting to agree with the speaker that advertisements can promote sales.
Today's typical advertisement often shows a celebrity using the product that the company wants to promote. From the psychological point of view, there are two reasons why this action would be effective to increase sales: (1) After such advertisement is constantly broadcasted in the TV or newspaper, people's subconscious accepts the product, even though they may not admit it. (2) People' desire to be successful would be enlightened when they buy and use the same product as it shows in the ads, because in this way people feel they are vicariously doing the same things as the celebrity does, so they could also succeed like the celebrity. According to the authority, any product advertised by Beckhamm, the most famous football player in UK could enjoy its immediate sales increase by at least 30%, although some could fall after two months. Therefore it is true that advertisements can successfully increase sales in the short term.

However, the foci would be too narrow if the chief of a company only focus on the short term profits of a product, overlooking the fact that only the long term profits can help a corporation survive and thrive. Although advertisements can help promote sales in the short term, there is no doubt that as time passes by, the effectiveness of ads decrease dramatically. The long term sales depend on many factors other than advertisement, such as quality and price of the product, reputation of the company, the after service. No one with sanity would buy the new product from a company whose former products are notoriously bad, or whose after service is criticized over and over. For the same reason, how would people buy the product with extraordinarily high price and poor quality? Admittedly, sales of a new product could increase in the short term, when people know little about it. Yet as time passes by, whether a product can consistently sell well largely depends on its quality and other factors.

Moreover, query whether every advertisement may increase sales in this way even in the short term. Although it is commonly accepted that if the ad shows the celebrity using the product, people will buy it, this is not true for every case. What would happen if the celebrity is widely rejected in the targeted customer group? In such cases, the advertisement may even have negative effects. Another reason is that nowadays the market is becoming more and more mature. Since customers are much saner than in the past, such promotional actions would possibly fail if the product is not backed up by its quality. Thus it is likely that not every advertisement will succeed in this way.

In the final analysis, the speaker's statement that advertisements can help the company enjoy profits is partly true. However the effectiveness is only valid in a short period of time.  If the quality of the product is low, or the price is high, or the after service is bad, the product will not sale well in the long term. Therefore a company should mainly focus on the improvement of the product as well as other intrinsic determining factors, instead of the ad. Otherwise the over-emphasis on the ad would only bring negativity or even disaster to that company.

感觉有些跑了, 涉及like的部分太少了
