This course is designed as an introductory survey of urban design

The first half of the course concerns issues and methods in urban design practice, situated either in
/ O8 A- ?! ?! ?the private or public sector – including both direct and indirect design. Topics to be covered in this
' G. F0 Q! P2 i9 lportion of the course include: design processes, land use controls and development standards, code
$ X/ v8 a4 x5 d- x( ?2 M" T: q/ ywriting, regulation, design guidelines, non-computational representation techniques, design+ c% }' z9 D$ `. x/ n3 i
participation, urban design planning and strategizing.; f$ V) ~9 P6 e

The second half of the semester then focuses on urban design research methods in both professional
' F$ ^' D' w1 j* t/ d8 ~* N& Sand academic settings. We will review common models of research design within the field and the
' c# J. k3 r( N: t2 P, f; N4 w9 R. ]increasing use of social science methods in response to external pressures. Students will be exposed
% m: Y8 k5 f% B7 E$ ito various research methods used to understand and analyze urban form, social behavior and% e6 H% i; a( C, ]/ b) h
environmental psychology. We will also examine various methods in built environment analysis,
' H* |# D6 g9 D1 {, tincluding both morphology and typology. Both qualitative and quantitative methods will be examined

This course is a spatial method elective core requirement for the City Planning masters degree and

planning. No prerequisite courses are required for entry into the course, although some familiarity
