COURSE DESCRIPTION: # ^; e( X _& F+ y! q* N
This course is designed as an introductory survey of urban design
% i l9 k2 m! C+ U* xmethods associated with both practice and research. The course begins with a series of discussions: _4 q( W* V$ ~' o% C7 p" r
on the field of urban design, attempts at definition, history of the field, basic epistemology, traditional
: V9 x6 n% K [$ a$ nand emerging roles, and design communication.

' i% r9 D; t8 C2 RThe first half of the course concerns issues and methods in urban design practice, situated either in- ]1 b3 v U6 `9 C: Y, ^
the private or public sector – including both direct and indirect design. Topics to be covered in this

writing, regulation, design guidelines, non-computational representation techniques, design

and academic settings. We will review common models of research design within the field and the

environmental psychology. We will also examine various methods in built environment analysis,
& T+ X T2 @" Q! aincluding both morphology and typology. Both qualitative and quantitative methods will be examined

This course is a spatial method elective core requirement for the City Planning masters degree and7 @ e( F9 | F) P& G9 u7 { H% a
also serves as a required methods course for the urban design concentration. It is strongly
