This course is designed as an introductory survey of urban design
; f0 Y$ N% T4 ~) r6 C0 w8 C0 s2 smethods associated with both practice and research. The course begins with a series of discussions' _5 |4 ?; t! k7 B* F: U
on the field of urban design, attempts at definition, history of the field, basic epistemology, traditional

: W2 d5 y! Q: J" p3 dThe first half of the course concerns issues and methods in urban design practice, situated either in

The second half of the semester then focuses on urban design research methods in both professional0 ^: L& N- n: c) b" m: Q# H
and academic settings. We will review common models of research design within the field and the3 K* X6 v: j3 y- {
increasing use of social science methods in response to external pressures. Students will be exposed

environmental psychology. We will also examine various methods in built environment analysis,' o! ?( V1 T8 W5 q: `
including both morphology and typology. Both qualitative and quantitative methods will be examined
