Although we are surrounded by dazzling images, which have become efficient way for communicating in the modern world, language is still the fundamental reliable way to convey an idea or value. So it is shortsighted and thoughtless for some people to come to the conclusion that the most effective way to communicate to large groups of people is through images rather than language, since they don’t realize the significance of language.
Language is irreplaceable especially by images. In the ancient eras, people’s willing to communicate and to record drove them to invent language, which at first was hieroglyphs, in another word, images. Gradually, with the advance of history, appeared characters, hence languages. Obviously, language is superior to images, since history is always progress ahead and people are always searching for anything better for living. In spite of language used professionally in literature, common language can be accepted and understood among people using the same language; however, because of the different ideology, people could have various notions to a same image. I remember in the children’s reading book(儿童读物,怎么说,呵呵) ‘ Little Prince’, the author drew a picture want to show a snake with a elephant in his stomach, while the adults thought it to be a hat. That is the problem of images.
In addition language is more precise and efficient to communicate ideas or values, especially for abstract conception. Say, if a teacher wants to tell his students what history is, will the students be satisfied with his showing of an ancient general or war field? Of course not. Nevertheless, the teacher could easily tell the students by words that history is a chronological record of events of significant and representative people and events. And in the president elections, what the candidate doing most is to use language in all kinds of forms, like oration, TV-conversation, publication of their issues in the newspaper, etc.
Admittedly, in certain circumstances images have the benefits of being more intuitionistic and easier to understand, like for kindergarten kids to understand what is what, for listeners to understand an engineers blueprint to build a new freeway. Anyway, the methods for communicating are intercomplementary. Adding appropriate images to language will affirmatively be more efficient and beneficial for communicating ideas and values.
In short, wherever and whenever we human beings are, language is already an inseparable part of us, especially in today’s world where are excessive quantity of information acquiring language to communicate. |
