Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Newspapers and magazines are the best way to learn about a foreign country?
Nowadays, under the trend of globalization, there are an increasing number of people becoming more and more interested in foreign stuff, such as their culture, food, economy, and policy. Fortunately, the development of communication and transportation technology provides us many effective methods to know about foreign countries which we are interested in. Newspapers and magazines are the most common way in which we get information about foreign countries. However, I do not think it is the best way to learn about a foreign country.
Firstly, newspapers and magazines may mislead us. I admit that newspapers and magazines have a lot advantages in helping us to know about a foreign country. It is cheap and convenient, we do not need to buy equipment, like radio, TV, computer. And there are various kinds of newspapers and magazines being available whenever we want to get them. But, in china, as we all know, before being published, the newspapers and magazines must be reviewed by the Press and Publication Administrative to make sure the content of them inclined to our government’ policy. It means that government can manipulate the newspapers and magazines, even all the mass media. What is more, the newspapers and magazines are written by some authors, the authors will unavoidably add some themselves personal feelings about staff what they write. These personal feelings will have an influence on readers and give them misleading information.
Secondly, newspapers and magazines have some limitations. The information included in the newspapers and magazines are short and limited. There are only some letters, at most inserting some pictures, used by authors to describe a foreign country, such as their culture, a famous natural resort, and history relics. We can not have a deep understanding about them. For instance, almost all of us have a kind of experience. When some our friends told us that he or she went to a fantastic natural resort with beautiful scenery, cleaning and cool water, and lovely wild animals last summer holiday and suggested us going there too. But when we went there by ourselves, we felt that it is just OK, even terrible. Many things we have to experience them by ourselves, or we will never have a real and exact recognition about them.
As mentioned above, newspapers and magazines is a good way for us to know about a foreign country, but it has itself disadvantages. We’d better go to the country that we want to know by ourselves to have a personal experience about it. This is the best way I think to know a foreign country.
