The effectiveness of a country's leaders is best measured by examining the well-being of that country's citizens.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

How to evaluate the effectiveness of a country’s leaders? The criteria are changing with times based on the main values and focus of asociety. Nowadays, increasing attention is paying to the well-being of people and many governments include it as the most important aim. I believe that it is an inevitable tendency to measure national leaders’ effectiveness by examining the well-being of their country’s citizens.

To begin with, the focus of the society determines thestandards for effectiveness of national leaders. During the first half of last century, at a time wars happened like meals of a day, it is out of doubt that those leaders who could maintain peace in their county or win the wars would earn most respect. After the Second World War, most part of the world return to be peaceful and the main task for leaders in many countries then turn to developing its economic. Country leaders devote themselves in the global economic competition and try their best to achieve economic prosperity. Not long before, presidentObama visited many foreign countries most of which are business partners of America. Apparently, he believes that this kind of tactics will help to restore the economic prosperity of America.

It seems economic standard is still pervasive in today’sworld, however, there is arising awareness of the well-being of people. Many psychologists demonstrate in their researches that the ultimate goal of human beings is to achieve happiness, however, rapid glowing of wealth in the western world in the past fifty years has not resulted a general increase of happiness. And many economists also begin to realize that economic development can not equate well-being improvement. It is happy to see that some governments such as the United Kingdom have take an act to carry out national well-being test and include it as part of the measurementsof their government functioning. There comes the time for us to reflect the main task of our government and criteria of leadership effectiveness.

To sum up, the measurement of effectiveness of national leaders depends on the main task of that government which may different from generation to generation. I believe this is a time to transfer the criteria from economic development to citizen’s well-beings.
