Nonmainstream science, such as astrology, fortune-telling and psychic, has a long history. By observing the stars in the sky, Chinese monarch could predict victory or failure of a battle hundreds of years ago. Only until now in our society, including me, people contend that nonmainstream areas of inquiry not only satisfied the people but also promoted the society.

Nonmainstream science, which has been called in question for all the time, does actually satisfy human natures as well as maintain their spiritual holy land. As the head of our campus psychology institute Mr. David once said to me(and I paraphrase)：“my father left me when I was thirteen years old , at that time, I almost could not continue my study even my life. I recognize that the person who loves me most has disappeared and he would no longer embrace me when I teared. But something that con not explained by mainstream science makes me know that my father has just gone to another world which our human nature has not discovered. As the head of psychology institute in our school, his word illustrates the point that nonmainstream areas of inquiry satisfy people who hold no confidence or passion to the future just like himself.

Simply put, without nonmainstream areas of inquiry, our society would find itself bogged down in the Sargasso sea of unexplainable question overload. At that time, people spend most of their time on discussing some phenomena which could not be explained in that level of science or should not be explained in that period of time so that the mainstream areas of inquiry will be ignored and the consequence is , the society could not progress smoothly. When the mainstream inquiry could not afford or be available, the rest approach is to turn to nonmainstream areas for help to satisfy people's insatiable appetite. In other words, nonmainstream areas of inquiry understudies the role of mainstream areas when the society need a exit to ignore some ambiguous questions and need people focus on some explicit questions at that period of time.

Admittedly, there is no denying that overemphasizing the importance of nonmainstream areas of inquiry should prevent people from actively struggle against fate or making effort for better future. Take the famous argument "where do we come from" as an example. For a long time people have concluded that we, human nature, were the sons of Adam and Eve only until when Darwin has constructed the theory of evolution.

While I am certainly not a Theist，I do believe as human nature, we need to look for a bit more balance between science and nonmainstream areas of inquiry. Maybe without nonmainstream areas of inquiry some people will sink into the fear of unknown to the future or the sorrow that can not avoided. On the other hand, common sense tells us society can not progress without science. In conclusion, we should devote our life in the science to tackle the problem which is one of the nonmainstream areas, if we can't, it just an ambiguous nonmainstream phenomenon.
