In this era extremely characterized by knowledge explosion, the significance of education has been attached our broad attention, which at the same time arises a complex issue-that is, by what way education can be truly effective. If it is specially designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student, will our ultimate goal be achieved? Insofar as I see, the main task of education is to cultivate well-round students in order to promote social advancement, not only to develop their interests and meet their needs.
Admittedly, interest, an innate fascination for special academic subjects, serves as a stimulus to motivate students to study with higher efficiency. There are numerous instances in the history to illustrate this point. It is the interest for physics that Newton delves into it and formulates three fundamental laws of mechanics, leading to the law of gravitation. It is the interest for biology that drives Darwin to further study the process of human evolvement and finally establish the theory of natural selection. Also, the needs of students should not be neglected. Education system is an organic mechanism that requires the involvement of all students, teachers, and the outer environment. Only by respecting students' need can we expect the well function of education.
However, meeting individual needs and interests of each student is far from enough. Thomas Jefferson says (and I paraphrase):" A sound education should aim at the improvement of both one's moral and faculties that has been the dominant." These words indicate that education is supposed to instruct the mass of citizens in not only reading, writing, but also their rights, duties as men and citizens. In addition, to be outstanding and successful in the modern society one should also master such skills as leadership, balance between cooperation and competition, and interpersonal courtesies, all of which needs the guidance of education.
Moreover, if only needs and interests of students are targeted, it is hard to imagine one would reach great achievement in his/her academic or professional domain and make a significant contribution to the subject, which can be aptly explained by the example of Einstein. As a prominent scientist, he once said: "imagination is much more important than knowledge." He spent time on playing violin and reading novels, because he believed music and literature would facilitate his imagination and his academic research. Hence, it is necessary to learn some knowledge beyond the field one is studying, no matter he/she is interested or not. Nowadays, generalists are urgently required for the reason that more and more subjects are interacted and interdependent. From this point of view, it is education's responsibility to provide a basic knowledge framework for students.
The sad truth lies in that, more and more colleges and universities shift their origin educational goal to job-orientation in order to meet students' need, which would definitely mislead them while choosing their majors. Under this trend, students may choose the majors which seem to secure them decent and well-paid jobs, totally blind to what they are really interested. Also, this trend gives rise to an undesirable unbalance development between practical science and pure science. The truth should not be concealed that pure science provides the fundamental principles, methods and tools for the research in other sciences. Therefore, both practical and pure science deserves our equal emphasis and the goal of education should be reset to quality-orientation.
In conclusion, when it comes to education efficiency, individual needs and interests of each student should not be over-emphasized, which otherwise violates the original purpose of education. Only with a correct attitude toward it could education enjoy a sound development.
