TOPIC: ARGUMENT167 - A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.
*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology.

The argument seems valid but has several flaws as follows: firstly it does not provide the volunteers' feelings in the third week so the comparison is incomplete; then the experiment is lack of counterpart thus it supports the conclusion little; finally without more evidence we cannot judge that the lavender does cure insomnia. Synthesizing the above fallacies, the conclusion that the folk remedy has been proved effective is ill-considered.
To begin with, without the volunteers' feelings in the third week, it is impossible to evaluate the effect of lavender-scented pillows. Chances are, the volunteers felt even more tired than the previous two weeks. (这一观点很有力)If this is the case, we cannot make sure that the lavender-scented pillows have a satisfactory effect on the volunteers' sleep although they slept longer and more soundly. Therefore, the comparison between the three weeks is an incomplete one thus bolsters the results little. In order to supplement it, the arguer should provide the accurate volunteers' feelings during the third week.
What's more, the experiment is not a scientific controlled one since it lacks the necessary counterpart which should be composed of the volunteers who sleep with normal pillows rather than the lavender-scented ones. It is possible that the volunteers slept longer and more soundly in the third week when the side effect of sleeping medication is eliminated.(有点牵强) What's more, in all likelihood, the volunteers felt tired and slept longer due to their daytime work or much exercise but not the effect of lavender-scented pillows. Additionally, perhaps the volunteers sleep even better with normal pillows since the effect of lavender-scented may be negative before it is found out. In summary, if the experiment conducts a group of people whose physique is similar with the volunteers now but sleep with normal pillows, the conclusion of the experiment will be more convincing and scientific.
Last but not the least, given that the lavender-scented pillows improve the volunteers' sleep indeed, it is unsubstantiated to conclude that the lavender cures insomnia without follow-up observation. Perhaps the better sleep results from the psychological effect on the volunteers since they are conscious that they sleep on the lavender-scented pillows. Or probably only with the lavender-scented pillows can the volunteers fall asleep. (没说清楚)All the possibilities above denote that once without the pillows they are likely to have insomnia again. If it is the case, the conclusion that the lavender cures insomnia over a short period of time is a hasty one.
As I presented above, the argument is well-stated but not well-reasoned with the flaws. In order to provide a cogent study of the effect of lavender on insomnia, a controlled and long enough experiment and more accurate data of the results are indispensable.
