No matter in the present or the past, rituals and ceremonies, as a part of tradition, play an important role in defining a culture. I consent that it helps societies or groups of people to be informed of who they are. However, they are not the only factor which contributes to the sense, which will not be diminished without the rituals and ceremonies.

A ritual or ceremony is not only a process of acting but a process of culture definition whose meaning is hidden behind. Every program in a ritual represents something about the desire or judgment of the unique culture. In ancient China, the ceremonies often contain annoying requirement of accuracy which reflects the rigid hierarchy of ancient society and emperors' autocracy and authority. For example, the raw material of tableware in a family ceremony is strict according to the social bracket of the family members. If you simply deserve the silver plate, using golden ones without permission is a crime. Additionally, almost everything is different in various ceremonies in the Forbidden City according to the dissimilar importance, such as the different number of follows, the different animals which is rode by the emperor. All these are the symbols of ancient Chinese culture which is observed by everyone in the past. In summary, the rituals and ceremonies actually contribute to the definition of a culture.
这段的例证很充分，但是觉得论点总结的不是很到位，而且也不太合适，其实我理解的是，ceremony就是社会价值，社会精神的一种外在反映，我觉得作者本段的意思也是如此，不知道对否？
It is just because of the rituals and ceremonies, the societies or groups of people find out who they are in the process in many cases. The Baptism in the western countries is a good instance. The holy process gets rid of the original sin of the baby thus it is defined as Christian. With this ceremony and the latter education of its parents, the babies will hold this sense of who they are forever. Another example is the ceremony which shows the worship of the Yellow Emperor, who is ancestor of the Han Chinese. The splendid ceremony which often lasts for days in April every year help Han Chinese people remember that we are the posterity of him. Consequently, through the process of a ritual and ceremony, one can better understand the culture or the nation he belongs to and forms the sense of who he is gradually and forever.

Nonetheless, rituals or ceremonies are not the only way to possess this sense of who we are. Without them, individuals can (root the sense) 这个词真不错 in their blood through many other cultural elements. For example, the widespread songs among the African-Americans help them to memorize their hometown in the Africa and remind them of who they are and where they are from. Take dance as another instance, when someone from Argentina tangos 少谓语？, the beautiful movement and feeling helps him to remember his homeland and the images of his friends and family. Food is a good symbol of a culture as well. If some Chinese people have been leaving from his motherland for a long time alone, he will surely remind of his families or even (burst into tears) 好词组 in front of a plate of dumplings. Since there are always some unique elements, such as folk songs, dance, food and so forth, these factors contribute to the sense of who we are and where we are from as well as the rituals and ceremonies. Therefore, societies or groups of people will not have a diminished sense of who they are simply without the rituals and ceremonies.

Culture is a mixture of different factors in everyday life. Since rituals and ceremonies contain a host of cultural symbols, they help define the culture indeed and contribute to the sense of who they are. However, other aspects as I mentioned above can also take the same role hence merely without unique rituals and ceremonies, the sense of who we are, no matter in societies or groups of people, will never be diminished.
