On the issue of education, parents are always asking teachers for more. Nowadays, a teacher who is good at teaching may not be regarded as a good teacher to students’ parents any more. Besides teaching, parents require teachers to show more abilities. For instance, the ability to keep a good relationship with students is one of parents’ preferences. So when it comes to the question whether or not having professional knowledge is more important than holding a good relationship with students, both teachers and parents are hesitating. They all want to kill two birds in one stone. Based on my abundant experience, the hesitation exactly shows the truth that both the two abilities are essential for a teacher.

To begin with, if teachers don’t have professional knowledge, education means nothing. Generally speaking, as a teacher, his/her first duty is to impart knowledge to students. In a word, knowledge is very fundamental for teachers. Parents send their children to school, aiming to let them understand the world and develop their certain capabilities which would be useful in the future. Without knowledge, teachers are sort of useless to students, and students no longer have the need to go to school.

Also, if a teacher doesn’t have the ability to keep a good relationship with the students, s/he would meet difficulties when imparting knowledge to students. Due to teachers’ various appearances and personalities, children unconsciously love some of them and hate the others. The inclination on teachers does have a significant effect to the students. For example, if students don’t like a teacher, they would not listen to his/her speech and may show no respect when being asked by the teacher. The result would be obviously showed on the scores, most of the students won’t do well on certain courses which are taught by teachers they hate. As score is the only resource for parents to know how their children are doing in school, it is necessary for teachers to have a good relationship with students so that they can concentrate on the class and do well in exams.

To sum up, as I have mentioned above, both the two capabilities are important to teachers. Frankly speaking, these two are connected. If a teacher wants to teach students better, s/he should develop a good relationship between them; if a teacher wants to keep a good relationship, owning abundant knowledge is the way to make students respect him/her.
