The speaker states that all faculty should spend time on other fields which relevant to courses they teach to improve the quality of instruction. I concede that the professors should have some knowledge besides the field they are engaged in, but it is different in different fields and the quality of instruction may be not improved by that.
First of all, in contemporary education system, there is higher standard for faculty to guide the students. If the professors in the college or university just focus on the professional knowledge in which they are majoring, they can not give the fresh insights and attractive examples in the classes. The students could not be concentrated in unimpressive courses and get useful knowledge from the classes. In addition, the students request not only the knowledge from the tutors, but also the guide for the future life including the choice after graduation. If the professors have different field’s knowledge, they can help students who are serious about pursuing a career in that field to make more informed career decisions.
Secondly, professors spend time working outside the academic world relevant to the courses is not bound to or the only way to improve the quality of instruction. According to the statement, the main purpose of spending time working outside the academic world is to ameliorate the quality of instruction. Nevertheless, if the professors spend more time on the other fields, they do not time to prepare for the classes. Or if they can not combine the different information properly, the students will be confused about the different field’s information.
Just spending time working outside will be harmful to the quality of instruction at the college and university. In addition, it will be more useful to advance the quality of instruction by understanding what the students’ needs and want. This information could be acquired by chatting with students after classes. If the students just could see the professors in the classes, they don’t have chance to talk to the tutors about the thoughts of study and career. The quality of instruction could not be improved.
Thirdly, there are a lot of methods to keep faculty members in touch with outside world besides directly working outside. They can read about latest progress in their areas outside academic world; or they can attend the seminar in different fields. Moreover, whether spending time working outside the academic world, it is uniform in different fields. For example, engineering, which is more pragmatic area, is strongly related with quotidian life. So the professors need to work outside to get the newest information about what are needed and then they can direct the students who are majoring in engineering.
To sum up, working outside the academic world may be a method to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level. I insist that it is more important is how to use these information properly and it is not uniform in different fields.
