TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music,

提纲:
1.
Critcs可以在大量艺术作品中进行挑选,让一些作品为大众(包括专家和其余大众)了解

2.
Critique独立于艺术品之外是没有价值的

3.
艺术品才能 承载价值,由艺术家提供

It is no denying the fact that some masterpieces survive from the overwhelmly large amounts of art works by the help of critiques, without which the great works may even be unknown to the public. Critics could contribute to dig out the invaluable works and promote their reputation. However, it is fundamentally believed that artists instead of critics give long-lasting valuable things to the society.

Thanks to the critics' industrious work of selecting fine arts among myriads of works and/or giving evaluations from professional perspectives, some great arts have access to the public. These valuable critiques could both draw the authorities' in the field and outsiders' attentions, leaving them to appreciate the selected arts, which would otherwise have been fallen into oblivion. With such critics' help, potential masters could lift their reputation in a certain field, and be spread to the outsiders for appreciating. Claude Monet's household known great work, "Impression, sunrise" is just an example. When consider it as "obscure use of lights and colors" , the critic Louis Leroy used the term "impression" meaning confusion to disparage the oil
picture and the new style painter in its first exhibition. More people who were attracted by reading the critique went to have a close scrutiny of the painting, whose way was against the domain classical realistic style. However, the new kind of painting style gives them fresh impression, like the fog in London could be colorful, making the work of high value till now. Hardly could we guarantee the lasting value without Louis Leroy's critique, even though it abused the work. And some other masterpieces also accord with the situation of "Impression, sunrise", which were available to public by critiques.

But unfortunately, critiques are subjective opinions which cannot stand alone without arts. Different people may have various ideas about a single artwork, as a thousand Hamlet in a thousand readers' mind. Perceived feelings of the critics' may not represent the major taste, just as Leroy's evaluation of Claude Monet's work. Even granted they are on behalf of mainstream ideas of the contemporary society, people in later generations could get different understandings of arts under changing societal backgrounds. We cannot say a critique alone would have lasting value, because they may function as a reminder of drawing attention and be forgotten in history.

It is arts which are the basis of long-time merits to the society, for they could reflect inner feelings and thoughts of artists’ themselves and get resonances among generations.
Artists could use the artwork as a way to show their joy and sadness; hope and desperate, intentionally or not, revealing some aspects of societal problems and impulses and calling for groups of people to promote the well-being of the society. The novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is the embodiment of compassion for the black slavery in the author's mind, which are of significance in the American novel history as a mile stone. Many artworks are not promoted by critiques with their own popularity results from valuable thoughts. With the depicted situations still exit, no matter in realistic world or peoples’ imaginations, the resonance arouses by the artwork would have lasting value.

To sum up, critics could help bring the merits of artist's work to the society. But as the artwork is the basis of the value, it is proper to state that artists provide the society with something of long-time value, instead of the artists.

Even granted they are on behalf of mainstream ideas of the contemporary society, people in later generations could get different understandings of arts under changing societal backgrounds. We cannot say a critic’s evaluation (lz批注:是不是也是艺术创作?
Lz好问! 写的时候真没考虑到这个问题。  这样改下有没有好点)alone would have lasting value, because they may function as a reminder of drawing attention and be forgotten in history.

Instead, it  is artists who creat artworks embracing the basis of long-time merits to the society, for they could reflect inner feelings and thoughts on their works and get resonances among generations. Artists could use the artwork as a way to show their joy and sadness; hope and desperate, intentionally or not, revealing some aspects of societal problems and impulses and calling for groups of people to promote the well-being of the society. Take Kar-Wai Wong’s literary movie “My Blueberry Night” as an example, he shows his own understanding of life and love in the film. Although it is not easy to agree and absorb his deep feelings, it could promote viewers to think and pursue the answer on their own. On this point, it is Wong who gives the merits of the film to the society rather the critics. With the depicted situations exit, no matter in realistic world or peoples’ imaginations, it is the artists work to get the resonance arouses by the artwork which has lasting value instead of critics work.

To sum up, critics could help bring the merits of artist's work to the society. But as the artwork is the basis of the value, it is proper to state that artists provide the society with something of long-time value, instead of the artists.

Lz改得很仔细~ 谢谢啊~
现在想想,之前写文章的时候好像是有点走偏了,感觉在写是艺术品有价值而不是艺术评论
麻烦lz再看看这样小改动可行不~  如果不行我还是重写一篇算了~
