88 "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."
When it comes to the history of human beings, technology has always been one of the most vital elements which have significant influence on its process. Lots of social phenomena, including social customs and ethics, are under the influence of technology. However, is that equal to the saying that technologies actually determine social customs and ethics? While technologies are indeed critical, our social life is determined(impacted) by a collection of factors, not by technologies only. Admittedly, technologies have been playing an irreplaceable role to a variety of respects of social life. Technologies mainly determine what kinds of productive tools we use and thus affects our social customs greatly. The reason lies in that is simple: we human beings cannot do things beyond our ability or achieve goals without proper tools. Imaging those people who were living in prehistorical period watching TVs with their family in a cosy living room which was warmed by air-conditioners in the evening, isn't that ridiculous?
They couldn't do that not because they didn't want to, though we do not know exactly what they might think, they can not enjoy our modern daily customs mostly because they did not master the techologies we have today. As for our social ethics, they are also changing with the development of available technologies and their acceptance. Considering the cloning technique, when it first came into our sight, most of us would take it as somekind of evil power, regarding that offending original ethical pricinples and religious believes which were the foundations of human's spirit worlds. However, with the notion that that technology could and have been practiced wisely and then saved numerous lives, promising a brighter future, many of us have changed our attitude towards that high-tech. Fewer and fewer people today would think that kind of biological breakthrough is against basic ethics. On the contrary, more and more people have already welcome it as a powerful tool to guarantee a final solution to many once untreated disease and malformation. While technologies do have changed a lot of our social habits and even ethical views, we need to realize that is not the only factor which plays an important role in social science realm. Some other elements, such as religion , spiritual development, philosophy, and most important, the deepest desire and natural curiosity inside our mind, contributed much to the formation of present social customs and ethics. There are several religions thriving in the world today and those people who genuinely believe in them(disciples) do certain kinds of ceremonies everyday;
children are loved and nurtured by their parents carefully since the very time our race appeared on this planet not because we had, have or will have what kinds of technologies but just because we know instinctively that it is our duty to do that, say, continuing our race and handing over the ability of love. In addition, most accepted virtue which have been little changed along with the times are not determined merely by technologies, but by our consciences, sense of responsibility and the awe of nature. To sum up, technologies influenced our social customs and ethics in its unique and inevitable way together with many other vital factors. It is hard to measure which is the most decisive point but all of them form a co-working system.
