TOPIC: ISSUE131 - "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
What benefits and informations we get from the arts? The speaker asserts that the answer is the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society. I agree with this assertion while the speaker seems to ignore some other respects of art's meaning.
Arts are born in real life. The ever-changing society provides and brings us a great number of good programs. Daily life fulfilled by pressure for living and hurry steps to work usually blind ordinary people's eyes to find the beauty of the life and the world. Fortunately, artists have clarity thought and solitude spirit to observe the world for us and reveal hidden ideas, which we fail to discover. No body wants to face the disaster since the feeling of fear, depression, as well as awful despair would devour us. But though the artists' eyes, a new perspective from which we would find virtue, gratefulness, courage, and deep beauty in human's nature, which we may seek for a long time during the daily life. The movie "Titanic" appear to my mind to illustrate this viewpoint. On the shrinking ship, most men there gave up the chance to live but to exhaust themselves to save children and women; Jack choose to stay in the icy cold sea but to keep Lucy from hurt. Every scenario brought by the great artist could teach audience the power of courage, selflessness and love hidden in people's heart. And it is enough to convince us that, with the protection of love, all of us could have nothing to fear as Lucy in the film.
Nevertheless, some products in art may not reflect any deep ideas or impulse of our society. Instead, they are just the plain copyright or aggregation of scenes in daily life. Take the light comedy "Friends" for instance, which is the program consist of trivial in those six youngsters' life. Although some episode might render laughter, which often related to those member's inappropriate behavior and words, we could hardly conclude any meaning of life or impulse from this comedy.
Furthermore, there are still some masterpieces without reflection of society's ideology or motive power. Especially in some poems and paintings, the artists only express strong feelings and particular understanding of themselves. For example, in the poem "When you are old ", written by William Butler Yeats, the description of the lady who is full of sleep and nodding by the fire reflects the poet's personal adoration towards his dream lover. It is farfetched to let readers look for society's impulses in this love poem, which is produced in the ground of personal relationship.
Besides, paintings of Qi Baishi, one of the most famous painters in the field of Chinese painting in China, often target in lobster and fish. These masterpieces, in which the small animals are almost alive, are just considered as the reflection of the painter’s personal interests towards nature without any inference with society’s hidden idea.
In general, in the process of production of arts, artists all have diverse attitudes and purposes. Thus the arts, no matter masterpiece or soap opera, contain and reflect distinct meaning. Admittedly, some of the arts glamorize the ever-lasting virtue and spirit of human nature and reveal treasure and impulses buried in daily life of society. However, without any consideration of the large background of whole society, many arts merely reflect the artists’ personal preference and even the simple collection of elements in daily life. |
